Excellent point from the North Pittsburgh Politics blog:
Forget the arguments about voter suppression, this is all about forcing Democratic candidates and the Democratic Party to spend money and time on making sure people have ID. As the Democratic Party spends thousands on making sure voters have Photo ID, they won’t be able to spend that money on their message about the middle class.
My hope is that this turns out to be wrong, and that the effort to get people photo IDs will actually be a highly effective (if low-productivity) form of GOTV. I’d guess that many of the folks who don’t have photo ID are also likely to have a low propensity to vote in general. But if you have to waste 3 hours at the DMV getting an ID for Election Day, you’re going to the polls on Election Day for damn sure.
