Robert Vickers says Mark Critz thought a rape joke would be just the thing to lighten the mood in a room full of women:
No attendee of the 2012 meeting interviewed Monday would repeat exactly what Critz said, but several recounted that a Critz joke intended to lighten the mood of about 150 female conventioneers produced gasps of disbelief instead.
“The joke, and the main setup of the joke, was a home invasion and a rape scene, and in the end the perpetrator is gay,” said Missa Eaton, a Mercer County Democrat who attended the meeting.
“Women don’t tend to take kindly to jokes about rape,” Eaton, who is supporting Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski in the lieutenant governor’s race, added. “We sat there stunned. The joke bombed, and there were audible gasps.”
Lancaster County state committee woman Sue Stoltzfus was receiving a “Woman of the Year” award at the meeting.
Politicians: if you’re thinking about saying something about rape other than to condemn it, just stop. There’s no way anything good will happen to you after that.
