Bill White tells it like it is. Charlie Dent still wants to take the debt ceiling hostage to defund Obamacare. He’s against shutdown hostage taking but for debt ceiling hostage taking. That’s worse!
The Morning Call story said, “Dent has long said efforts to weaken Obamacare should be saved for the battle over raising the debt ceiling.”
If that’s still the case, he’s not abandoning the dream of defunding or delaying Obamacare at any cost. Rather, he wants to join his fellow Republicans this month in their attempt to blackmail the Democrats over the debt limit, risking fiscal catastrophe by letting us default on paying our bills. I think that would be far worse than shutting the government down for a few days or even weeks.
They’ve played this game of chicken before, and Obama flinched, but I don’t think that’s going to happen this time. If they persist in operating on Ted Cruz Control, House Republicans will be the political equivalent of suicide bombers, threatening to blow up not just their party but our credit rating and, to an extent still to be determined, the U.S. economy.
All to prove how much they hate a law that, whatever its merits, was passed by duly elected majorities in the House and Senate and signed into law by a president who campaigned on this very issue and won easily. Twice.
If that happens, and Dent joins the nihilists, it will hard for him to credibly lay claim to the label “moderate,” whatever he’s doing on less important votes. He’ll just be another extension of the tea party caucus, letting extremists drag all of us to disaster.
Moderate In Name Only.
