Mayor Street will not run for Congress after his term expires in 2008, said his friend of 30 years, U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, despite speculation that the pair might swap jobs.
Furthermore, the Democratic congressman said he wouldn't support the mayor for Congress.
Fattah, who says he is "highly likely" to run for mayor in 2007, prefers to see his district represented after he steps down by an African American woman.
"If I run for mayor, I might even be in a position to make that happen," he said in an interview Wednesday.
Fattah said he viewed the 62-year-old Street as too old for the congressional job, as those in it are typically elected at much younger ages and might stay for a decade. Fattah, now 49, took office at age 38.
Street has long said he had no intentions of getting out of the "political business" after his term ends, but he has not offered specifics about what he is likely to do.

Re: Fattah: Congress isn't for Street
Would that African-American woman’s name happen to be Rene Chenault-Fattah by any chance?
Second, I agree that Congress probably isn’t a good fit
for Street because he’s too used to running the show, first on city council, then as mayor. Being a freshman
representative is a long way from having that kind of power and influence.
Third, I like Fattah, but that comment about Street’s age is just as ignorant as if Fattah had used race or gender. Does the congressman think productive life ends at 60 and over? Geesh…
