PA 05 -- Mark McCracken Enters the Race

Welcome to pool Mr. McCracken! It is nice to see a Democrat with strong credentials (at least on paper) reach out to the blog community as part of launching his candidacy.

He sounds great on paper. What say you? I would love to hear some input from those of you in the Clearfield area who have first hand experience of this new candidate for the 5th District seat.

Attached below is his official press release. I have added some points of emphasis for your approval.

Mark B. McCracken of Clearfield announces his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in the 5th Congressional District of Pennsylvania on the Democratic ballot. Mr. McCracken, age 44, is a lifelong resident of Clearfield County and is currently serving in his second term as Clearfield County Commissioner. Prior to being elected county commissioner, he served 10 years on the Clearfield Area School District Board of Directors.

Before entering politics, Mr. McCracken worked in the computer and information technology field from 1983 to 1988 with North American Refractories Engineering Department in Curwensville, PA and served as Director of Information Technology for Clearfield County Government from 1988 to 2004.

In announcing his candidacy McCracken said “I believe I have the experience necessary to serve this vast rural district in north central Pennsylvania. As county commissioner, everyday I deal directly with important issues facing all counties in the district including economic development and job creation, balancing budgets, controlling health care costs and dealing with constituent issues. I also work on a regular basis with officials from all levels of government including the state and federal.”

Currently, Mr. McCracken serves in the following positions: Member of the Full Board – North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, Board Member – Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority, Board Member – Central Pennsylvania Community Action, Member of the Executive Board and Technology Committee Chair – County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, Board Member – Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging and is a member of the Executive Board of the Penn-Ag Democrats.

Mr. McCracken also serves as chairman of the Northern Counties Heath Insurance Purchasing Cooperative Board. This board was organized in 2005 through the efforts of Commissioner McCracken working with commissioners in Clinton and McKean counties to form a multi-county health insurance purchasing co-op and create a self insured pool account. Participation in the co-op is up to 9 county governments and member counties are bringing health insurance costs under control which is saving tax dollars.

Mr. McCracken resides in the Clearfield area with his wife Kelly and daughter Amanda. On the personal side, Mr. McCracken states “My wife Kelly and I both work full time jobs in order to make ends meet. Like the majority of people living in the 5th district we struggle to pay our mortgage, car payments, utility bills, child care expenses, rising gas prices, heating costs and to put food on the table. Unlike others already in this race, I know firsthand the problems that working families face everyday, and Washington isn’t helping us.”.

Commenting on what he feels is the biggest problem confronting the nation Mr. McCracken said “The problem Congress must confront is the growing financial crisis and stalled economy.

The federal government’s debt is at an all time high, big name banking institutions are on the verge of default and are being bailed out by China, Saudi Arabia and other foreign interests.

My greatest fear is that the security of our nation won’t be breached by terrorism but through economic and financial collapse brought on by the uncontrolled debt of the federal government.”.

Mr. McCracken continues “It is time that the President and members of Congress, regardless party affiliation, start showing fiscal responsibility by balancing the federal budget and paying down the national debt. This will make us stronger, more secure and allow us to address important domestic issues like health care, tax reform and keeping social security solvent.”.

On issues specific to the 5th district Mr. McCracken states “I oppose the tolling of Interstate 80 and as a county commissioner have been very active working in opposition to tolling. I have a strong record in opposition of landfill development and the import of out of state trash to the region. I fully support the rights guaranteed to law abiding citizens by the Second Amendment.”.

In conclusion Mr. McCracken acknowledges this will be a tough battle for a Democratic candidate to win. “As a lifelong resident of the region, I know the political layout of the 5th District and the north central region. I trust that voters from all parties will look closely at the candidates and will elect the person to best represent them in Washington. The one belief that I hold firm is to remember who put me in office and who I work for. It’s not the lobbyists, the party leaders, the big money contributors or the special interests. My commitment is, and will always be, to the individual voters and citizens that elect me.”.

Sounds great to me! The question is: Can he back it up?

What say you?

Honest and a hard worker

I am a supporter of Mr. McCracken and know him to be honest and a strong advocate for Clearfield County.

Because Clearfield County is so large and rural, Mr. McCracken has made every effort to meet and listen to the needs of his constituents.

In my mind, he would make an excellent member of Congress. He is someone who KNOWS the struggles of people trying to make ends meet.

good choice

McCracken has the qualifications needed to make a great Congressman.

He has roots and ties to the area and will NOT be another Santorium with his wife in Washington and a phony residency in the district unlike Cahir. That guy ( Cahir ) has no business even running.

best choice

Mark made a great case for his candidacy last night (1/23), addressing the Jefferson County Dems. I’ve always known him to be very knowledgable about the way government opporates on different levels and dedicated to his constituents. Mr. McCracken has a solid reputation in Clearfield County, and understands the issues we face in this district. And with a proven record, he will be able to appeal to voters of both parties in November.

While Cahir (who I fear may not understand all the concerns of everyday district residents) & Vilello (who may) also gave nice presentations, it was Mr. McCracken who inspired the most confidence in me.

Thoughts about McCracken

Mark McCracken is a solid candidate for the 5th district. The one thing that concerns me, however, is whether he has the personality to be able to defeat the GOP candidate. I guess time will tell. Mark has done good work on the school board and as county commissioner and if the voters look at records not just words, Mark should fare well.

Intelligent, Dedicated, and Integrity

Intelligence, dedication, and integrity are three words that best describe Mark McCracken. We are former residents of Clearfield County but wish we had the opportunity to cast our vote for him. We’ve known him and his family and hold them in the highest esteem.

McCracken

Mark McCracken has done a pretty decent job on both the Clearfield school board and county commission, and has name recognition in the county. Two concerns about him as a candidate, however: (1) He’s a nice guy, but I agree with the poster above that he just might not have the personality to successfully challenge the GOP nominee (whoever emerges out of that mess); (2) he may not have the fundraising ability to compete with the GOP candidate — especially if it’s a self-funded one like Walker or Shaner — on such a compressed primary schedule.

Fundraising

I think it’s important to take advantage of internet support in fundraising, which could help minimize the difference. If Mr. McCracken were the nominee, he could set up ActBlue pages, appeal to the many liberal Democratic blogs and easily raise money.

I think people are willing to hear about a Dem candidate, especially in this election and may be more open to moderate ideas in the CD.

Is the 5th District for sale to the highest bidder?

I guess the question is, will the 5th district be for sale to the highest bidder or will the voters consider who has the best ideas?

It’s said that Walker and Shaner could both spend $1,000,000 to win the seat.

Currently living in Harrisburg

Originally from up that way, and I would support Mark for sure. If he needs anything from friends in Harrisburg, I’d be glad to help him out.

Information!

I certainly hope Mr. McCracken will have a web page! It is difficult to get information on candidates. I am afraid the area papers do not do a good job of covering elections.
As a former director of Information Technology in Clearfield County, Mr. McCracken must be aware of the issues the digital divide creates in the 5th district. We need to bridge that divide for the sake of an involved citizenry as well as business.
Someone noted that he spoke to the Jefferson County Dem’s. I wish they would get a web page too! I am a democrat, and I live in Jefferson county, and it would be nice to know there are events! There are too many small groups that do not reach out to new people or the next generation, that is what is needed if we are to get more democratic candidates into offices in this region!

Papers

Read Courier-Express Thursday, Friday, Sunday, March 27-30. A half-dozen stories about candidates/issues/etc. Remember, it’s not newspapers’ jobs to PROMOTE candidacies. You’re right there. That’s up to the candidates to do on Web pages, in ads, etc. But I think our newspaper does a reasonable job.

the proposed landfill

I believe that the economy in our rural areas would be better revived through tourism and the potential numbers that specific activities could bring in as compared to the harms that establishing a landfill and all of its associated “progress”. Even dangling the lure of an energy alternative such as methane-at the expense of losing rails to garbage stinking cars is unthinkable in our area.

Supports tourism and is opposed to landfills....

I know Mark and he has as strong record supporting tourism and was one of the first commissioner’s in the region to come out in support of the Pennsylvania Wilds plan.

I also know he is opposed to landfills in rural central Pennsylvania.

Mark for Congress

Mark McCracken is an excellent candidate for Congress. He is a family man dedicated to his family and his community. Mark has strong beliefs and the personality and support to get the job done.

Good luck, Mark!!!
