Older adults should fear McCain-Palin

Republicans often accuse Democrats of trying to scare seniors about GOP plans for Medicare and Social Security. However, Democrats’ warnings are rooted in reality. Republicans have tried to undermine these critical social insurance plans for years. Unfortunately, McCain and Palin are no different.

Take Medicare. The non-partisan Tax Policy Center estimates that McCain’s health plan would cost $1.3 trillion over ten years. To pay for this, Senator McCain has proposed some minor changes in Medicare; however, no expert believes these can achieve the savings needed to finance the McCain-Palin health plan. The Wall Street Journal has reported that McCain will pay for his plan by making major cuts in Medicare

John McCain and Medicare

In an article addressed to “senior citizens of America,” Doug Holtz-Eakin, Senator McCain’s chief domestic policy adviser, assures us that John McCain poses no threat to Medicare (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/letter…...). According to Holtz-Eakin, “seniors will receive higher quality care at lower costs and reduced premiums.” This sounds good, but when it comes to Medicare, seniors should beware Republicans bearing gifts.  read more »

MR. TODD: Well, you know, we talk all about young voters, and we talk about African-Americans, we talk about this, we talk about that. This thing is  read more »

We Can't Afford to Privatize Social Security

Voters of all ages face a critical decision in November, namely, which candidate, Barack Obama or John McCain, will best protect Social Security.
Like many Republicans, Senator McCain has supported President Bush’s proposal for partial privatization. This would allow workers to invest as much as a third of their payroll contribution into stocks and bonds. Creating these accounts would cost at least a trillion dollars.  read more »

OBama vs. McCain on Health Care: What Kind of Change Do We Need?

John McCain claims to be the candidate of change. However, when it comes to health care, the change he offers will make things worse, not better.

Like President Bush, Senator McCain seeks to undermine our system of employer-based insurance (EBI), which, since World War II has provided
health care coverage to millions of workers. Today, EBI continues to be the major form of coverage for employees and their families.

Currently, individuals who receive EBI do not pay taxes on it. Under the Bush-McCain plan, however, these benefits would count as income, making them
subject to taxation. Senator McCain would offer families a $5000 tax credit to compensate for their increased taxes or to buy coverage of their own in  read more »
