CNN: Gerlach Retains Seat; Fitzpatrick Loses to Patrick Murphy

CNN.com has called the PA 6 and PA 8 races.

Republican Jim Gerlach has again retained his seat against challenger Lois Murphy.

And, in an important upset, Democrat Patrick Murphy has beat freshman Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick.

Re: Ironic result of GOP redistricting

If you look at the numbers in the 8th, Pat Murphy won in both the sliver of NE Philadelphia (1000 votes) and the odd arrow that juts into MontCo (1500 votes), but lost BucksCo (1000 votes). It turns out the state GOP was “too clever by half” when they drew the lines in the 2002 redistricting to capture Republican registered voters in the Hatboro/Horsham area. It was that part of MontCo that put Murphy over the top. Had the GOP created a more “compact” district, they might still have the seat in the 8th.

Re: Ironic result of GOP redistricting

I picked the wrong Murphy. At least I got the area code and last name correct.

As far as a more compact district, you are absolutely correct that Fitz might have won, but then Gerlach would have lost b/c those districts would have gone to him (or Schwartz, giving some of Schwartz’ dem districts to Gerlach). Funny how it all would have translated into a bunch of Republicans lost.
