The holiday season just became a lot brighter for children in South Philadelphia, as more than 50 citizens, activists, elected officials and politicians filled the room at 1601 and came bearing gifts for Local Politics Matter's first annual Toy Drive.
Speakers at the South Philadelphia event included Councilman Frank Diccico from the 1st District. Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter, City Council candidates David Oh, Mark Ruben, Andy Toy and Marc Stier all addressed the crowd and brought toys to the holiday event. Each used their time to speak on the importance of public service and how that directly impacts the community. Congressman Chaka Fattah and Tom Knox also sent campaign staff to bring their contribution.
"I'm grateful to everyone who came out tonight with toys for children," said James Stanley Smith, founder and co-director of LPM Group. "Eight campaigns were represented at this drive, and this is our first event. The LPM Group is going to try its hardest to make every candidate remember the people of South Philadelphia."
The toys collected at 1601 on Dec. 19 were donated to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 3rd and Reed streets. Continuing their mission of political awareness with results, LPM Group's next event will also benefit the residents of South Philly, as they host a Winter Clothing Drive at 1601, located at 1601 S. 10th Street, on Jan. 23. "It's an incredible start for our first event, to take an entire carload of toys to the church, and know that kids in South Philadelphia will have some very happy holidays this year," said Stephanie Odell, co-director of LPM Group.
