Corman won't seek Peterson's seat

From Centre Daily Times:
State Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, announced today that he will not seek the seat in Congress that will become available when Republican John Peterson retires at the end of the year.

Corman, who represents the 34th Senate District, was widely viewed as a likely candidate for the Republican party nomination to the seat, but said in a news release that family considerations made him decide to stay in the state Senate.

Corman has three young children, while the 5th Congressional District is, geographically, one of the largest in the country.

“Ultimately, as exciting as it would be to serve in the United States Congress and help shape public policy on a national level, the decision came down to what is best for my family,” Corman said in the news release.

“As my former boss and dear friend Rick Santorum once said to me, ‘anyone can be a United States Congressman, but only I can be my wife’s husband and my children’s father.’”

So who's gonna run?

So, referencing our discussion back here … now that Corman is out, who will run on the R side?

Democratic chance

The Republican Congressman for my district 5 in Pennsylvania – John Peterson -has announced his retirement. This district may look Republican BUT we elected Bob Casey to Senate, Governor Rendell by a landslide and have repeatedly elected a liberal Democrat, Dan Surra to the state house by huge margins. Penn State University is in this district and so are some strong unions. Many people here HATE Bush and his whole administration. We are ready for change.
Republican Peterson had little money and less support. He is a TERRIBLE congressman – a complete rubber stamp for Bush. This could be a sleeper pickup for the Democrats. The Republicans do not even have a candidate and final registration for April primary is only a few weeks away. Out here in rural Pennsylvania the media market is really cheap. The Democrats could win this seat with $200,000. Last election the Democrat, John Hilliyard had only $10,000 for his campaign and still got more votes than any Democrat in recent times!
Tell Chris Van Hollen about this district – a little help could make this like the New Hampshire victory for the lady Democrat you did not even know was running!
Prove the 50 state strategy works.

Democratic Chance

I sincerely hope the DCCC will spread some funds in CD 5 but word has it that they will be using all their Pa. money to retain the four seats they took in 2006. Rumor is that there will be a Dem candidate for Peterson’s seat, but it won’t be Hilliard.

After this weekend’s Dem State Committee meeting in Lancaster, we’ll know exactly who is running for what seat. Then it will be petition time and for those of us who have to drive on unpaved roads for “door to door” signature gathering let’s hope the good weather lasts.

State Committee

I don’t think I’ll be able to make it out to State Committee (though I may drive out early on Saturday), but I think RobHop will be there. I can’t wait to see what the results are!

and Cindy?

Oh and maybe Cindy said she was going as well. In any case KP will be there!
