At Least Five Republicans Move to Challenge Carney

A great roundup of Carney challengers from Gort42:

Chris Carney has now attracted at least 5 Republican challengers.

Don Ely, a retired school teacher and minister from Northumberland County is the only one who has officially announced his candidacy for the nomination. Davis Haines of Tunkhannock is someone I’ve never heard of but he knows State Rep. Tina Pickett and showed up at her picnic. As predicted self described Homeland Security expert and statewide loser Joe Peters has been on the hustings. Greg Skrepenak’s (D-Luzerne) buddy Christopher Hackett of One Source Staffing Solutions got some nice press in the Williamsport paper. He emphasized his opposition to illegal immigration, which is standard fare for a Republican, but that is dangerous territory for someone who runs a temp agency.

And the eventual nominee Dan Meuser had a nice interview with Townhall. He bobbed and weaved about Iraq and other foreign policy issues and takes a couple of swipes at Bush. He’s against increasing taxes, promotes free trade but doesn’t want to screw with Social Security.

Anybody Live in the 10th?

Do any KPers live in the 10th? Which candidate is the GOPs best hope? It’s probably not a shock that Republicans see the 10th as their best pick-up opportunity next cycle. Now that Marino has bowed out, who gives them the best chance to make Carney a one-term wonder? What’s the word on this Meuser character?

The best candidate seems to

The best candidate seems to be Meuser. He is a successful businessperson who helped to create 1200 jobs in the district. Involved politically- knows the right people. Raised alot of money for Santorum. Very conservative and pro life. THis guy Hackett sounds pretty good but he runs a temp agency and will be killed by the union money against Carney. Seems to be conservative but the blogs are saying he was pro-choice but changed his position- which is the kiss of death in the 10th. We need to learn more about both of them. They both gave $$ to Dems but seems like HAckett gave alot more to them then Republicans. It will be an interesting primary but I think the edge goes to Meuser. Even Hackett said so in his artilce- described Meuser as the frontrunner. I would like to hear the both of them before we start making any decisions.

the best candidate seems to

On the web, if you research it, Meuser supported the Republican party quite generously and between him, his company and his employees, they raised vast amounts of donations for charities and community services. I like what I see about this Meuser guy as there is so much positive information regarding his track record with helping not only the community but people with disabilities as well. He’s got my vote along with my friends and familiy!!!

Meuser cares about the 10th

Meuser cares about the 10th district, including the 1000+ employees who work at Pride (with good paying jobs and benefits), many who live in the district. He is a true conservative, donates generously to the Republican Party and knows his way around the hill. From what I can see, Meuser will be the man to unseat Carney.

where are the top tiers

I think that’s a reasonable question. Right now, the state senators and state reps are staying home. Why aren’t they getting into the race? At this point, I’m seeing a bunch of candidates that would normally be considered 2nd tier (business owners, teachers, political party types) b/c they’ve never held high profile office.

If none of the top tiers get in, I think it’s reasonable to ask why they aren’t getting in? Do they not see Carney as being that vulnerable?

2nd tier

I don’t like to think of business people as second tier. Your question is valid though. I think some of them are playing it safe and realize that this will be a tight race. Carney will not be easy to beat but he is beatable. The district is 50% Rep, 38% dem, and 12% independent. The one that I think could have done this is Sen. Lisa Baker- her district covers the 10th Congressional district and she is very well liked. The problem of course is money. This race will cost millions. I beleive that business people could be the best candidates as long as they have a record of achievement. I am not talking about a small business owner who does not have the experience of running a large organization that has to deal with working with a large group of people who have different agendas (sound familiar). To solve our problems we will need people that know how to work with others to get things done. This “do nothing” Congress needs to go. We need people who are committed to getting our issues solved- immigration, taxes, out of control spending. As you can guess I am a conservative. I did a little research on both of these guys and the meuser guy sound more like what I think is a candidate that can beat Carney. Hackett sounds pretty good but people are saying he is pro choice and he is a top dog at the W-B Chamber (papers say they are having some financial difficulties). I want to learn more about them and look at what they have done and what they plan on doing for our area.

Is it much of an issue that

Is it much of an issue that Meuser doens’t live in the 10th? He lives in Kanjo’s 11th and his business is also located there? Why does he want to run in the 10th? I assume you can run if you don’t live in the district – otherwise he wouldn’t be considering this. Maybe he is moving – but that raises a lot of issues as well.

I also think Carney will be very difficult to beat for almost any republican – he is playing his votes very carefully and seems to be doing a good job in raising money for his campaign.

Good question on why the existing elected reps are not getting in on this race – maybe they know how tough Carney is going to be.

Carney is planning his

Carney is planning his votes and statements to look like a conservative. He has stated in his town hall meetings that he votes with the republicans 30% of the time because he has too (no rumor- I was at the meeting). I am not a fan but would rather he stick up ofr his principles. I would rather have a person that votes consistently, then you know where you stand. The liberal blogs are killing him and suggesting that Dems stay home and not support. Of course he is getting alot of money from liberal PAC’s- He slammed Sherwood for that in the campaign- expect it to be an issue.

A friend of mine who knows Meuser says he is moving inside the 10th. His existing house is like 300 feet outside the district. That sucks but he seems willing to eliminate this issue. I hate moving.

Not sure how moving into

Not sure how moving into the district eliminates this issue. Carpetbagging is not looked upon in a very favorable way…unless you’re Hillary.

Is there a reason he doesn’t want to challenge Kanjo? – Kanjo seems to be exposed on may fronts and seems beatable. Why does Meuser want to represent the 10th and not the 11th? Why would he uproot his family?

I don’t think that will

I don’t think that will stand in this election. Meuser’s business has been here for 20 years so to say he is a carpet bagger is quite a stretch. I assume that he has lived here all those years. Where would be a good question? Remember our present person moved here 6 years ago from Iowa. The other challanger Hackett moved from Philadelphia, I think 10 years ago. If he moves then it solves the issue for me. The Dems will say he moved just to run. My viewpoint is Yes- that is quite a committment that he is making if it matters to the average voter. Regarding Kanjo- I don’t know- good question to pose to him.

kanjos district is mostly d

I believe that Kanjorski’s district is mostly dems.. it is also on the other side of the river.. the 10th is meusers back yard.. even if he is 300 feet out .. why not run in your own community with a favorable registration.. he sure gives a lot to charity in the 10th..

i hope yudichak will be going up against kanjo.. kanjo sure smells on the cornerstone fraud scandal.. if you or i took all that money from anyone (let alone the us government) paid it to our selves in salaries and filed chapter 7 , we would be in jail.. the first time it was investigated, the d’s traded a this scandal to the r’s for one of their guys.. I think that was reported in the hill, this time it may stick. yudichack has a reputation for being an honest guy , i’m behind him if he runs

anyway , easy to understand why meuser wants the 10th .. seems to make sense..

Big Dan

I heard Chris Hackett on WILK/Corbett, and Corbett asked Hackett a question about birth control, and Hacket had a meltdown: stuttering, stammering, avoiding answering the questions, I think he had a ‘breakdown’. Someone should ask him about birth control again…sounds like a rightwing evangelical whacko to me! Or, at least, pretending to appeal to them, based on his birth-control “meltdown” moment on the radio…
