In a surprise move, Congressman John Peterson has announced he will not seek re-election and will retire when his term expires at the end of 2008. Peterson, a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, has recently been a staunch opponent to efforts to impose tolls on Route 80. Over the course of his career, Peterson has been known as a supporter of the culture, economy, and livelihood of the residents of his rural district.
“I will not be leaving Pennsylvania or my community, and I intend to continue to fight for public policies that promote jobs, wise use of our natural resources, and quality of life issues for America’s rural population,” Peterson said in a statement released Thursday morning.
Elected in 1997, Peterson represents Pennsylvania’s most rural district, spanning 17 counties in the North Central region of the state. Prior to being elected to Congress, he served since 1977 in the State House of Representatives and then the State Senate.
“Those of us who have had the pleasure to work with John over the years know he’s a man of passion and principle — and a man of endless energy when it comes to defending the interests of rural Americans,” said House Minority Whip Roy Blunt in a separate statement.
Talk has already surfaced that state Senator Jake Corman will seek to replace Peterson in the 111th Congress. Scott Conklin, a popular Democratic State Representative, has said he will not run for Peterson’s seat.

Will Conklin change his mind?
So there’s a lot to talk about here, but one big question I have is whether Scott Conklin is now reconsidering his statement that he wouldn’t run. An open seat often makes all the difference, though the district is considered safe for Republicans. Thoughts?
Conklin
It would be great if he stayed put. Turn out numbers do not favor dems in the region. His turn will come.
Conklin will run for Corman's vacant Senate seat in 2009, so
he won’t have to risk his House seat.
Makes sense to me
This makes the most sense to me and is certainly the safest course of action.
Conklin CAN NOT run for Corman's Seat
Conklin does not live within the boundries of the 34th District. Conklin resides in state Senator Wozniak’s district.
Ooops!
Our mistake! Great catch, anonymous.
Don Hilliard
I just spoke with Don Hilliard, who ran against Peterson in 2006. Don had pretty much decided not to run this time for personal reasons but now says he will reconsider. Hilliard ran a good campaign spending almost a year driving over the huge territory (the 5th cd is the largest geographical district east of the Mississippi). I think he could use a little encouragement and it would be a shame not to have a Dem candidate.
ME-2 is the largest
ME-2 is the largest district east of the Miss.
What a joke
Don Hilliard was an absolute clown and ran one of the most pathetic campaigns I have ever seen. He raised next to no money, offended activists and the only good thing to come of his campaign was that we now know just about the absolute baseline vote for a Democrat in that district (thought 2006 was an exceptionally good year so that skews the numbers a bit). Want proof that his campaign was terrible? In the 9th district to the south, Tony Barr got the same 40% Hilliard got in a district about 9 points more Republican.
Peterson’s “hands-on”
Peterson’s “hands-on” reputation must be catching up with him
groping
apparently, the women in washington aren’t as receptive to his advances as the chickies in Harrisburg were.
Never heard that
I’ve never heard that about Peterson. Seems to be a bit light on evidence…care to offer any?
please don't
Oh Lord. Please don’t offer any evidence. Just let the man fade into the night.
LV
HAHAHA
Fair enough, LVDem, but I just don’t like seeing that accused with nothing to back it up.
Dems need to recruit
an Iraq war vet with an NRA Life Member sticker on his pickup truck for this seat. Please dissuade Don Hilliard from another run. Joe Scarnati will clean his clock. And yes, it will be Scarnati, not Corman, who will run for this seat.
Any Proof?
Any proof that Scarnati will go from PA Senate Pro-tem to one of 435 Congressmen in Washington?
Peterson’s retirement is
Peterson’s retirement is a mixed bag, IMO. On the one hand, the district can do much better than him in DC. On the other, I’m not real keen on John being back in Pleasantville pushing hard to pave Venango County with new drilling rigs.
Maybe before he leaves office, the President could send John on a 15 year fact finding and good will junket overseas…:)
