Giuliani campaigns for Santorum

Campaigning with Rick Santorum in Blue Bell yesterday, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged Pennsylvania voters to return Santorum to the Senate, saying his fellow Republican had used his leadership to protect the country against terrorist attacks.

"He really has a comprehensive understanding of the dangers that are facing us," said Giuliani, who is considering a run for president in 2008. "He understands the importance of police, the importance of law and order."

Giuliani spoke to about 150 supporters at a national security-theme event at the Centre Square Fire Company in Blue Bell.

"The number-one concern of the federal government is national security," Santorum said. "It has to be."

Santorum spoke about U.S. policy toward Syria, the fight against "Islamic fascism" and his support for the war in Iraq.

But I'd like to know why Santorum had a pro-gay rights and pro-choice Republican campaigning for him. Does that call into question his "traditionalist" convictions or is it okay for the GOP to disagree on hot button issues but not the Dems.

No secret while Rudy did this; he has high Q-Scores and can raise cash for Ricky. Santorum, for his part, isn’t that particular about Guiliani’s politics; he just says, “Show me the money!”

Re: Giuliani campaigns for Santorum

I’m really disappointed in Giuliani. He was once a steadfast, independent politician who did the best for his constituents. Now the only constituents he serves in the right wing machine that is the GOP.

By the way, Mr. Santorum, we haven’t seen Arlen Specter campaigning for you yet…?

Re: Giuliani campaigns for Santorum

Super good point – Specter hasn’t said a word. Maybe because Santorum tacitly supported Pat Toomey…

Re: Giuliani campaigns for Santorum

more like the reminder will simply piss off the conservatives again. If Santorum stands next to Specter this fall, it will remind the right of the efforts Santorum made to knock of Toomey. Even in the SE, where Santorum needs to chip away at the built in D advantage, Santorum’s standing next to Specter would only serve to infuriate the grassroots folks who are not even totally happy with santorum as it is.

Re: Giuliani campaigns for Santorum

Giuliani (on my short list of great pols) earns respect from social conservatives due to his record of accomplishment in the “den of liberalism” that is New York City. True, Giuliani’s liberalism on social issues rubs traditionalists the wrong way, but he was arguably the most fiscally successful Republican in modern times (on par, if not surpassing, the Gipper, I would argue. His record on crime and public safety is impeccable. When it comes to campaigning, Giuliani is star power, pure and simple, like Bill Clinton. I’m sure Clinton doesn’t agree on every issue with every candidate he campaigns for, but he shows up in critical races, as Giuliani does for his party. I highly doubt Giuliani will appear as a viable presidential candidate in 2008 (due to his personal history more than his social positions), but he could take a prominent place in the next Republican administration.
