Hershey Closes Reading Plant, Moves to Mexico

The Hershey Co., the nation’s leading candymaker, said Monday that it will shut down a plant in Reading and cut 260 jobs as part of a wider move to cut labor and materials costs.

The closing is the company’s second plant-closing announcement in a little over two months after Hershey said it would take dramatic steps to reduce its North American manufacturing and expand in faster-growing markets in the developing world.

‘‘Our network operates at less than half of capacity and we must make significant changes to remain competitive,’‘ Hershey spokesman Kirk Saville said. Saville said the company would work out severance agreements with the unionized workers and close the plant in 2008.

You are adding to the erosion of the middle class and I will never buy your product again!

american economy

The economic food chain is declining daily. Manufacturing has been the back bone to the US economy for decades. With the loss of manufacturing jobs, sky h igh energy costs, the economy will continue to suffer. Only when energy costs drop, manufacturing returns, and a miracle happens( less corporate greed), will the economy improve. Coorporations don’t give a crap for the employee. The employee is just a number now, companies have no regard to the welfare of the worker in today’s work force. I only see continual decline for the US economy.

Milton Hershey School

MHS has lost 3 billion dollars in assets b/c of the incompetent BOM of the Trust. Many have asked the PA. Attorney General to look into this travesty, but he is beholden to the Trust. As he Hershey Co. goes down the toilet, so does MHS. The AG has to get off his fat ^%$ and do something before it is too late.

Go study economics

Everyone here is talking about Hershey closing. Oohh big bad America!! Good grief. If it was your business and you could make 190 million you would move operations to Mexico as well.

The funny thing is this is the same story that everyone was crying during the Industrial Revolution when the “machine” was taking away the jobs. It might take a little while for our economy to adjust to a service economy but we’ll do it. And not buying a Hershey bar isn’t going to do a darn thing.

maybe you would feel

maybe you would feel different if it was your job you were losing. This an american company and its founder is rolling in his grave.

5 bil profit but cutting costs???

At the expence of the American people. Causing them to be jobless and possible homeless. Have you no shame??? I put you in the same class as Heinz and will not purchase your products any more. I will find another chocolate company to purchase from.

This is how a thing called communism got started

When the Playtex lingerie company moved to Mexico a company executive said “this will enable us to cut labor costs by 95%”. When the young reporter asked how much of this savings would be passed back to the American consumer the executive angrily replied “this interview is over” and stalked off. The ONLY answer is for Americans to start boycotting these companies—absolutely nothing else will work.

I would like to see a law that says a product’s label must be in the language of the country where it was made. A walk through Wal Mart would be a Chinese lesson. If all products made overseas were sporting labels in Chinese, Indian, Spanish, whatever, the doltish public might finally wake up.

Labeling Country of Origin - Large Font

I totally agree, it’s the only way Americans will take notice of where these things come from. I tried, about a year ago, to only buy my kids back-to-school clothes “made in America”. I went to more expensive stores, thinking that shopping at the lower cost stores to be the problem. I found the same countries of origin at the Mall stores, and wondered if any textiles are made in the U.S. anymore. My response…I started sewing again, and am teaching my kids too. Problem is, I’m sure the cotton came from the U.S., but the fabric isn’t made here either. Likely India or Pakistan. When we recently bought some bottled apple juice, and hadn’t noticed it was made in China, we threw it out. I don’t want to eat anything where they don’t have clean air and water standards. It’s ridiculous that we are going to have to read the fine print on every label at the grocery store now as well. If they won’t label it in the language of the country where it is produced, make them label it in an enormous font (say it must be the largest font on the label, with a minimum of say 25 pt. font).

Hershey foods is run by the Hershey trust

The thing about Hershey is that is NOT run for the benefit of the shareholders. It is actually set up to be run for the benefit of the Hershey School and, I believed, is owned by the Trust. All decisions are supposed to be based on ensuring the Hershey School can be run in perpetuity.

It is probably a unique business arrangement.

For a good read, try “Emporers of Chocolate”, which tells the story of both Hershey and Mars.

Say GoodBye to Hershey

This is what is cycling the internet today – maybe Hershey’s execs should pull thier heads out now…

Pennsylvania is a big state, but it amazes me in this day, how some news doesn’t make it over the mountain to the front page of our papers or the top of our news hours in Western Pennsylvania.

Milton Hershey, this year, will be joining H. J Heinz in rolling over in his grave. Hershey Chocolate is moving to MEXICO...whoopee! They’re even closing down Hershey Canada. Don’t buy any more Hershey Bars. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are my favorite and they are made by Hershey. But, I will not purchase Another one!

M.S. Hershey had a dream… I will buy my OWN Sugar, Milk, Cocoa beans, (all natural mind you!) and make candy…(no tariffs etc..) EVEN during the depression…HE and the Company made money…NOW some Corporate big wigs are ruining the name… AND the product M.S. created…

Please pass it on…What a bunch of college educated “idiots”.

Thank you M.S. Hershey for all the things I have and all you have done for me and my family…“I” do appreciate it…..., As for “Dick” Lenny and Company good luck you greedy, money loving BASTARDS ...you are ruining the name, the company, and MANY lives in central Pennsylvania…, read on…Enough is Enough!

So Hershey executives are closing plants in the US, laying off over a thousand people, and destroying Mr. Hershey’s dream, all to cut labor, material costs and AVOID PAYING ANY US TAXES!

The company will save about $170 million a year, all on the backs of the American people. The top executives will still make their mega bucks and the laid off workers will have to find other jobs, some probably at minimum wage due to their age. All this to take their jobs to India, China and Mexico, so WHAT part of the “GREAT” American Chocolate Bar is left?...NOTHING! These countries are no doubt laughing at the Americans, who they don’t like anyway. How long are the American people going to sit around and let big corporations do this to us? We must all band together and let our Politicians in Washington know we have had it with NAFTA, CAFTA and “SHAFTA” and we won’t take it any longer!

Please, do not buy any Hershey product! If the company wants to take the work to these countries, then let those countries buy the product. We don’t need it!

Most large companies no

Most large companies no longer see themselves as being based anywhere in particular; they are simply purveyors of products to an international market and where they actually produce those products is seen as nothing more than a calculated business and financial decision — and that means you go where the labor and goods are the cheapest.

Contrary to their pathetic and specious corporate “Vision Statements,” their only real vision relates to “How can I make more money for myself and make sure I keep the stockholders at bay at the same time…”

People like Milton Hershey apparently no longer exist and it’s a crying shame. Hershey sweetened the lives of many more people than his candy ever did.

Short of a middle class uprising, little is likely to change in the U.S. To me, it’s no wonder that Obama is showing strength on the campaign trail; he has tapped into the massive sadness and anger that many of us harbor about the way our country is being run…..

Piltdown Man

ps: If you want to start protesting against companies who are screwing the American worker…it’s going to be hard for you to buy ANYTHING.....

Americans Don't Seem To Care!

These companies move to other countries, pay less wages and benefits, if any, resulting in more profit. It’s all about money. They don’t care about the American people and never really did.

Very few companies, if any, care about their workers. Companies hire illigal immagrants, pay them the smallest wage possible or under the table, then charge the consumer the same inflated rate.

I blame those we intrust to run our government on our behalf. Not just the President. Senate, Congress, House, States, and Local governments are all to blame. Why? We see from year to year what’s being done to us and yet, we continue to put the same people back in office so they can do it some more. We Americans don’t stick together. Because of it, we’re loosing our country piece by piece.

We the taxpayors are the employers of our elected officials. Maybe we need to demand more and let their crap slide less. If they aren’t for us, then they aren’t working in our government.

Stand together and demand more. Settle for nothing less.

Several things stand in the

Several things stand in the way of us “taking back our government.”

One, running for office and staying in office has become a full-time job in which professional third-parties (consultants, pollsters, lobbyists) extend constant, influence. They have the money and the power to be on the front lines EVERY DAY. Average citizens do not. And that brings me to…

Two. Two income families with children and insane job pressures are unable to find the time to even go to local meetings, much less contact their Congressional delegation. In this world, political activism on any level is way down their “to do” list.

Three. We are much more successfully manipulated by politicians than we were years ago, because they have the money to do constant research and polling. This essentially short-circuits the political process.
In particular, as the poster above notes, we “don’t stick together” because professional marketers have found ways to splinter our nation into bit-sized constituencies…and play they off against one another.

Pilt

I tend to agree, Pilt

I tend to agree with you Pilt, but I’m also of the opinion that the Internet gives us as citizens the opportunity to raise awareness and participate more. It’s why in my professional life I’m a constant advocate of governments making good faith efforts to move information and services online.

I too feel that the Web has

I too feel that the Web has been an “equalizer” of sorts. But is still lacks the sheer power of TV, which is where politicians go to make their pitch. Many websites are ecstatic to get 20,000 page visits/eyes a month, which is about what your average TV station gets during one commercial break….

In addition, while the Internet has become a factor, but it still lacks the ability to appeal emotionally.

Hershey closing

I spent many a summer day and evening in Hershey Pa. This is a very sad situation. I hope our goverment takes notice. I as many others will never purchace any Hershey product. That make me very sad, as it is my favorite. Mars Here I Come!

Hershey

Count me in as NOT buying anymore of these products!

Hershey

Have you no shame???? USA needs the jobs to stay in the USA!

hershey

I work at the Reading Plant which is to be shut down sometime this year. I truly enjoyed my job, and working for a first rate company. Not only are we losing our jobs, we are expected to go in every day and carry on as if nothing is out of the ordinary. Production is the only consideration, not the poor slobs who keep the lines running while worrying “HOW AM I GONNA MAKE IT WITH OUT A JOB?” Yet the production goes on.

hershey

Sadly, Hershey’s move is nothing new and will surely not be the last. Those not directly affected will show very little reaction as they are trying to deal with the daily disasters in THEIR lives. On the other hand, those losing jobs are crushed. But what often goes unnoticed in these situations is EVERYONE is affected. The lose of directly connected jobs, as well as trucking, train transport, out-of-state warehousing and distribution, packaging firms are just a few of the pie pieces affected when a firm this large relocates.

As damaging as this can be, this entire economy is based on free enterprise and Hershey is free to move its enterprise whereever it wishes. It would just be refreshing to see a cornerstone of an entire Pennsylvania industry stay and support the very people that made it great.
