Help Us Compile a List of Public Databases

Here in PA, it’s far too hard to access public information online. That’s why we’re starting a longterm project to build a directory of online public databases.

To do that, we need your help. Comment on this post or contact us to suggest additions to our growing list. Together we’ll make public information more available.

Thanks to this week's advertiser!

A quick thanks to this week’s advertiser, the PA Democratic Party, for helping pay the bills.

Whether you want to become a campaign professional, run for office, or help your local candidates win, Campaign Camp will help you learn the necessary skills that win campaigns. Check out the great training the PA Democratic Party is offering in Pittsburgh on March 23-25.

Blogging about Drugs

Last week, I received an email from Gort42. His community is struggling with drugs right now and the issue has finally touched a nerve for him. Rather than go vigilante on everybody, Gort decided it might be best to spark some discussion. He and I collaborated a bit and then sent an email to our friendly neighborhood blogging buddies asking them to consider taking the time to author some reflections. As usual, fellow bloggers took up the task and came through. Here are some of the links I have been able to track. If there are more, post them and we'll get them up and running.

Jake Miller from Keystone Politics talks about crime and drugs
LV Dem on regional approaches
Gort summarizes he feelings
The American Check Up gives us links to information sites and statistics
PSOTD talks about supply and demand
Left Independent discusses the National Security angle
Wilkes Barre Online just goes with the flow
Jane talks about the shortcomings of drug policy and what we can do to remedy them

Bottom line is that this is the second time a "topic forum" was proposed for area bloggers and we have a core group of bloggers that come through. Thanks to those who participated. Maybe two or three months we'll do another topic.

Blogroll Updates

KP has a variety of bloggers that link to our site and we do feature them on our blog roll. From time to time we will try to give you a summary of what they are saying. In the meantime, we encourage you to visit these fine folks and engage in conversation.

20th Senatorial Blog talks about adult entertainment and how it helps a particular candidate (b/c he shut down an adult entertainment center).
Above Average Jane gives an update on Murphy's campaign.  read more »

Farewell

Keystone Politics launched nearly a year ago; we’ve come a long way since then. The first day the site launched, we had 50 visitors, no message boards, and a design quite unlike the one you see today. Since then, PA-Wiki was created, we’ve published over 1,200 stories, and the site is now visited by many thousands of visitors each month. Without sounding too terribly immodest, I’m damn proud of this site and all of the people who help bring it to you every day. Ben, phillydem, LVDem, and all the other people who contribute anonymously to our message boards and the site itself deserve a huge “Thank you.â€

Test New Feature

Hi everyone!

I've installed a new piece of software that I hope will make KP more useful. "Lilina" gathers headlines from other blogs and displays them in a single list. Check it out here.

1: Is this a useful feature?
2: Should this "feed" be displayed on KP's front page?
3: I'm missing many good PA blogs, e-mail me or post a comment with your favorites!

(UPDATE: I think I found better software that will display this on the KP front page. Please let me know which blogs you think should be included.)

Interview on GrassrootsPA

I've been interviewed for one of my favorite websites, GrassrootsPA!

Visit the site for the juicy, Topic-A-With-Tina-Brown-esque details of my life, political philosophy, favorite websites, tennis players, etc.

Also, I'm anxiously awaiting the publication of the latest issue of Lehigh's alumni magazine, where I'll be profiled.

What's In Store For 2005...

There are a lot of big questions swirling around the bitter, yet always fun, world of Pennsylvania politics. Will Bob Casey challenge Rick Santorum? Just how many people will run in the Republican primary for the Governor's seat? When (not if) will Mayor Street be indicted? When will CBK give us new material so we can stop using Edward G. Robinson jokes? What does Keystone Politics have in store for readers in 2005?

I'll take all of those on and then some. Let's get the easy ones out of the way: Yes, six, March, when she gets lost in the basement of the Capitol. Hmmm, that leaves just one burning question in the minds of you dear readers: What do I have up my sleeves for 2005?

First, I'm pleased to announce that I've been hard at work redesigning the site. Hopefully, our new look (which should launch before January 10th) will make the site easier to read and more fun. It will also provide the flexibility necessary to accommodate the changes I'll explain below.

Next, I'm working hard on some technical changes to the site. For instance, did you know that you can receive our content via RSS? It's a great way to scan all of the headlines each morning - in fact, I use RSS every day to quickly read the 800 or so headlines from PA newspapers. Depending on how much time and technical prowess it requires, I may have a few more RSS tricks in store to provide timely news from across the state to KP readers.

I've optimized the site for both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers. I've been using Firefox for about a month, and I'm amazed at the capabilities it extends to users. It includes a lot of great features, including a built in "Live Bookmarks" feature which will allow you to check if KP has been updated without having to visit the site. Keystone Politics is also available on your Blackberry/Palm/Windows CE devices. I don't own a Nokia phone, but apparently it's also available on any Nokia using the Symbian operating system. Check out www.avantgo.com for more info.

The biggest (and most important!) feature I'm adding is called "PA-Wiki," and it will serve as a collaborative encyclopedia of PA politics. (Wondering what a Wiki is?)The site's readers will be the editors of the encyclopedia, adding and editing entries to collectively build the premiere information source on PA politics. This feature should be ready within the next few weeks - once it goes live, it will be up to everyone to make it as useful as possible!

But wait, that's not all! I'm also flirting with a few other ideas, including allowing users to author individual diaries/blogs on the KP site. That's in the early stages. In the meantime, check back frequently during the next three weeks as I upgrade and update the site's looks and functionality.

Mozilla Live Bookmarks

I inserted some code in the site last night which should enable Keystone Politics for compatability with Mozilla Firefox's "Live-marks" feature. Learn more about it here, here, and here.

Statistically, 3.4 percent of you use Firefox. So, in classic "Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy" fashion - you're welcome. For those of you who don't use it, you should - the site looks better on it (unintentionally).

We’ve developed a participation policy to help guide the tone of discussion in our community. Please read it to learn more about participating in Keystone Politics.
