There are a lot of big questions swirling around the bitter, yet always fun, world of Pennsylvania politics. Will Bob Casey challenge Rick Santorum? Just how many people will run in the Republican primary for the Governor's seat? When (not if) will Mayor Street be indicted? When will CBK give us new material so we can stop using Edward G. Robinson jokes? What does Keystone Politics have in store for readers in 2005?
I'll take all of those on and then some. Let's get the easy ones out of the way: Yes, six, March, when she gets lost in the basement of the Capitol. Hmmm, that leaves just one burning question in the minds of you dear readers: What do I have up my sleeves for 2005?
First, I'm pleased to announce that I've been hard at work redesigning the site. Hopefully, our new look (which should launch before January 10th) will make the site easier to read and more fun. It will also provide the flexibility necessary to accommodate the changes I'll explain below.
Next, I'm working hard on some technical changes to the site. For instance, did you know that you can receive our content via RSS? It's a great way to scan all of the headlines each morning - in fact, I use RSS every day to quickly read the 800 or so headlines from PA newspapers. Depending on how much time and technical prowess it requires, I may have a few more RSS tricks in store to provide timely news from across the state to KP readers.
I've optimized the site for both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers. I've been using Firefox for about a month, and I'm amazed at the capabilities it extends to users. It includes a lot of great features, including a built in "Live Bookmarks" feature which will allow you to check if KP has been updated without having to visit the site. Keystone Politics is also available on your Blackberry/Palm/Windows CE devices. I don't own a Nokia phone, but apparently it's also available on any Nokia using the Symbian operating system. Check out www.avantgo.com for more info.
The biggest (and most important!) feature I'm adding is called "PA-Wiki," and it will serve as a collaborative encyclopedia of PA politics. (Wondering what a Wiki is?)The site's readers will be the editors of the encyclopedia, adding and editing entries to collectively build the premiere information source on PA politics. This feature should be ready within the next few weeks - once it goes live, it will be up to everyone to make it as useful as possible!
But wait, that's not all! I'm also flirting with a few other ideas, including allowing users to author individual diaries/blogs on the KP site. That's in the early stages. In the meantime, check back frequently during the next three weeks as I upgrade and update the site's looks and functionality.
