Philly Program Seeks School Supplies for Homeless Children

The United Way of southeastern Pennsylvania has launched a program to collect school supplies for homeless children in the region.

The Stuff the Bus program collects thousands of school supplies for homeless kids in Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties, so that each child has a book bag to start school with in September. Joe DiVincenzo is vice president of marketing and communications with the United Way:

“The smiles on their faces, the excitement. It’s one less thing that they have to worry about when the school year starts. These kids have a tremendous handicap. When the day is over, they’re either going back out on the street or to a shelter.”  read more »

Camp Wellstone comes to Pittsburgh, September 14-16!

We know that many people in power today – regardless of political party or ideology – could do a better job of improving our communities. We need new leaders who understand what it means to send a loved one off to war, teach in a classroom without textbooks, or have to choose between paying for healthcare or buying diapers.

We can’t sit around and wait for those leaders. It’s up to us to make a change. Join us September 14-16 for a training in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!

Camp Wellstone is a weekend-long training that develops grassroots organizing skills for people interested in making change on issues, electing progressive candidates, or running for office themselves.

Don’t miss out, register today!  read more »

Emeral ash borer beetle found in Cranberry poses risk to PA's hardwood

I’ll be interested to hear what Darryl Metcalfe has to say about getting state and federal funding to help his constituents with the cost of removing their ash trees. I hope he sticks to his Republican principles and tells them no taxpayer help is forthcoming.

The first evidence of the expected demise of
Pennsylvania’s ash tree population was found this week by two young women, college students serving as summer interns for the state Department of Agriculture.  read more »

Radian Applauds President Signing Mortgage Insurance Tax Deductibility Law

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- President Bush today signed into law a bill making mortgage insurance premiums tax deductible. The legislation allows borrowers earning less than $100,000 a year to deduct the full amount of their mortgage insurance premiums paid in 2007. S.A. Ibrahim, CEO of Radian Group Inc. (NYSE:RDN) , commented, "We are extremely pleased that this important bill has been signed into law. This legislation broadens the choices available to borrowers by making the monthly payment for an insured mortgage even more affordable and convenient.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity this new legislation brings to educate consumers on their mortgage insurance options, and to broadening our market reach to those homebuyers seeking additional tax advantages."

* The MI premium is fully deductible at $100,000 and phases out for annual earnings between $100,000 and $110,000.

LPM Group Launches With Holiday Toy Drive

Local Politics Matter, a new political action committee focused on charity and political awareness, launches its first event on Tuesday, Dec. 19, with a toy drive benefiting needy children in South Philadelphia.

The event is an effort to give back to the neighborhood by raising both political awareness and the spirit of charity. The mission of Local Politics Matter (LPM Group) is to keep political awareness high among voters, especially for city-wide and municipal races.

The focus of this event, however, has the LPM Group directly addressing charity during the holidays. The Toy Drive, held at 1601 (located at 1601 S. 10th St.) will bring activists, politicians, elected officials, and citizens from all over the city. Everyone is asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the event, which will be distributed to children through a nearby church.

The group's directors are James Stanley Smith, a local businessman and a veteran of U.S. Congressman Robert Brady's district office and the Patrick Murphy for Congress campaign in Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District, and Stephanie Odell, who was most recently the Pennsylvania campaign director for Young Democrats of America. The latest addition to the team is Crystal Martzall. Former Field Director for Mike Paston in Pennsylvania's 152nd State House District, Martzall was also a field organizer for the League of Conservation Voters during the 2004 Presidential election.

Normally, PAC activities and charity events don't get much play at KP but I'm posting this b/c of the concept and the people involved. It's a great model for progressive grassroots activity.

PA Governor Rendell Unveils Gold Star License Plate for Military Families

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell today presented Pennsylvania's new Gold Star Family license plate to the mother of a U.S. Army Ranger who was among the first soldiers to die while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Governor Rendell presented the license plate to Ruth Stonesifer, the Department of Pennsylvania President of the American Gold Star Mothers, who was a driving force behind the creation of the new plate. Her son, Kristofor Stonesifer, was killed in a helicopter crash in Pakistan on Oct. 19, 2001, during an operation to move troops into Afghanistan. PFC Stonesifer spent most of his life in Doylestown, Bucks County.

"We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Kris Stonesifer and the other brave men and women who have courageously given their lives while serving our nation," Governor Rendell said. "The Gold Star Family license plate is another way in which family members may honor the treasured memory of their loved ones."

The Gold Star Family license plate is available to family members of persons killed while serving on active duty. Applicants must provide proper documentation and a fee of $20 to the Department of Transportation. The application, Form MV-912, is available through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services Web site.

The Gold Star Family plate is the 16th special military license plate to be created by the General Assembly. The others include the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, and Prisoner of War plates.
