Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

A pro abortion rally was held on the sidewalks in front of Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, PA on 7/05/2005 AD. Sister Rosie organized our counter protest [on 7/07/2005 AD] on the public sidewalks in front of Franklin & Marshall College to bring the message of GOD's love & the sanctity of all human life to that community.

There were about 40 of us present at this pro life rally. Our ranks including several senior citizens, husbands & wives with their children and young mothers with babies. The temperature was cool and we endured periodic light rain drizzle. Our umbrellas and our faith were ready for spiritual battle!

Our signs proclaimed, "FACE IT - ABORTION IS MURDER" & "REPENT - ABORTION & SODOMY." Included were also large posters of aborted human babies.

Interestingly, within minutes of our initial assembly on the public sidewalks in front of this well-to-do private college, a man aged about 30 pulled up to us & stopped his car in mid-traffic SWAT assault style. He yelled at us, "I order every one of you to leave this area immediately! Any one of you here in 5 minutes will be arrested!" He apparently was a supervisor of some type for the college campus security department.

Our response was generally to ignore him, which infuriated him immensely! He was then confronted by Sister Rosie, who informed him and his fellow security guards that we were exercising our GOD-given & constitutionally guaranteed rights of free speech & free peaceful assembly. He tried to claim that the sidewalks were private property, but was corrected over and over again by Sister Rosie that the sidewalks are public right-of-way domain. We begin to walk up and down the sidewalks, being careful not to step on the grass! This further stoked this young man's anger into almost irrationality! For his supposed 10 years of police experience which he later shared with one of us, this campus security guard supervisor was a professional embarrassment to himself, his men and his employer!

The Lancaster City police did indeed show up and Sister Rosie spoke to them in reply to the security guard's complaints against us. A city police sergeant - very polite, calm & professional in his bearing - was satisfied with merely taking Sister Rosie's name. He advised us to stay on the public sidewalks, keep moving and not to interfere with traffic. We blessed him in The holy Name of our Lord JESUS CHRIST with the Christian blessing, "The LORD be with you, Sergeant!" He replied with the Christian response, "And also with you!" Instantly we saw that it was GOD's protecting hand upon us by sending this police officer!

The city police then apparently advised the security guard supervisor & his officers that we had every right to peacefully assemble & protest on the public sidewalks! The security guard supervisor then asked if we had a "permit" to protest! We ignored him further and the city police apparently corrected him on that account as well, for he and his guards made no further attempt to interfere with our protest! Again we could see the hand of GOD protecting us because of our faithfulness to Him in proclaiming His Word and His Son to all whose hearts were open!

The campus security guards placed their patrol cars around us at 3 locations. As already noted, their intervention to restrain at least one young college student from verbally & physically assaulting us was a further clear sign to us that GOD is indeed in control and that He protects His saints!

The security guard supervisor resorted to wondering about the local campus parking lot and appearing to write down every license plate in the lot! Eventually a flatbed tow truck appeared and deployed quickly to tow a car. Several of us having parked in that lot as customers of the on-campus ice cream shop at that corner had parked there! However, the security guard supervisor struck out, as the one car towed was not one of ours. This gave us warning & time to move our cars to park on nearby public streets. Again we could see Divine Providence intervening to protect us - His servants!

Several of us bought drinks & other food at the ice cream shop. Sister Rosie was careful to ask for a receipt for her purchase. However, when one of us re-entered the shop to make a further purchase, the folks behind the counter apologized to us and reported the owner had forbidden them to sell anything to anyone who had been protesting! We assured the clerks it was certainly not their fault & they had no need to apologize. We blessed them in GOD's Name and they were visibly pleased that we understood their situation with Christian charity!

Sadly, a good number of young college-age people were viciously insulting, foul-mouthed & threatening to us. A young lady passing by bodily partially lifted herself through the passenger side window of her car to yell, "It's my XXXXXX! Get out of my XXXXXX!" A young man driving by cried out, "Get off my campus, you dirty religious zealots!" A young man walking by us threw down a flyer offered him & broke out in a string of foul, vicious curses at us - his words being almost incomprehensible to us - such was his frothing, drooling anger at us and at GOD! He was restrained from physically attacking us only by the authoritative verbal warning of a vigilant college security guard! A young woman driving by shouted, "Why aren't you at home with your family?" We soundly rebuked all these lost heathens verbally with the words, "THE LORD REBUKE YOU! THE LORD CONVICT YOUR HEART!"

We were pleased that many people driving by were in agreement with us. Several 18-wheeler trucks blew their air horns as they drove by. As a car packed with young ladies drove by, they blessed us in GOD's Name & waved their support. Many drivers slowed down to wave & honk their horns in support of our pro life message. A young man in his early 20's - after accepting our literature - started to protest with us! He carried on a conversation with one of our number on the issues of life related to GOD's Word with great hunger. Every time we saw him passing us in our midst, we praised The LORD with great joy!

As always, we thank GOD for allowing us the opportunity to testify to His Word & love, to the Cross of our Lord JESUS CHRIST and to the sanctity of all human life to our fellow citizens!

END OF REPORT.

doesn’t this belong in the press release feeder. It’s not an editorial or an article.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

Actually, it seems like a first-hand news account to me.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

Personally, I fiund this disturbing to say the least, but I also believe sunlight is the best disinfectant. Every Pennsylvanian should be able to see this crowd in it’s true unvarnished form.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

This just demonstrates how pathetic political discourse is surrounding choice/life issues.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

I don’t know, Ben, I think there are plenty of people who can discuss this issue rationally. The person who sent KP this story and the people in it can’t, but they are a small minority.

I doubt many people disagree with the premiss that children should be planned and wanted and that gives the family, whatever its form, the best chance to be a loving, cohesive unit. Further I think the vast majority of Americans believe we should minimize unwanted pregnancies by providing birth control before that happens. So I think there is a broad consensus from which to start, but unfortunately, a few people like those in this story, are determined not to allow that.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

Few people that I know oppose abortion rights more strongly than I do, but reading stories like these upset me. Unfortunately, some in the pro-life movement take to the streets in protest without offering any viable solutions for unplanned pregnancies. If one is going to oppose abortion rights, it is incumbent upon them to provide alternatives to abortion (adoption, counseling/financial assistance, etc.) The vast majority of abortions that take place in America occur for socio-economic reasons, but some in the pro-life movement are seemingly content with throwing around slogans like “Abortion is Murder!” and leaving things at that. I feel that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and needs to be rectified. In my opinion, a constitutional right to abortion does not exist. No person in America should be a victim of circumstance, especially the unborn. That said, women confronted with unplanned pregnancies certainly shouldn’t be stigmatized, and they should not be showered with empty sympathy. They need solutions, pure and simple. There are many terrific counseling services out there that offer financial help and prenatal care to those in need. Young women caught in terrible situations don’t need to be lectured with excessive rhetoric. In my opinion, the pro-life movement holds the high ground in this debate, and we need to start acting accordingly. Waving signs that depict aborted children doesn’t cut it.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

Too often the pro-life movement ignores the fact that life does not end at birth. They talk a good game about abortion being murder, etc., but when confronted with government policies that are aimed to alieviate poverty for children and their families, they scoff at them and say that it is government waste.

Life does not end at the moment of birth. The pro-life movement ought to get on board and show the political community that it truly does support children instead of lecturing us on their moral fortitude. The progressive movement and the right to life movement should have a common thread in that respect, but instead the radical right constantly grabs a hold of them by clinging to that one issue, completely ignoring the relevance of the rest of the problem.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

LV Dem raises a good point. I don’t think conservatives completely oppose aid to the underprivileged (especially children, who cannot fend for themselves), but instead question whether or not that aid will eventually lead to self-sufficiency. However, LV Dem’s point is well-taken that conservatives need to focus on what role government can play in fostering that self-sufficiency. Government, both federal and state, can play an “activist” role if that role aids in assisting those in need with education, “life skills”, and other necessities for basic survival. In other words, government should be in the business of assisting with educating and training those who, for whatever reason, don’t have or haven’t gotten the proper skills to make it through life. It certaintly should not be a blank check (i.e., pre-‘96 welfare reform), but conservatives cannot make the tragic mistake of turning their backs on the problem (which many don’t, but the few that do seem to drown out the rest). The left is not completely innocent here either. For whatever reason, many liberals oppose faith-based and private groups (basically any other agency besides a government-run outfit) assisting with this important effort. If a private group provides better training or more effective aid as opposed to a government agency, why not give them a seat at the table? I fully understand the “church-state” concerns, but government does not show religious favoritism simply by acknowleging that a church-run soup kitchen or training center does a tremendous job of serving the poor. The bottom line here is that LVDem was right – life does not end at the moment of birth, and as a conservative, I agree. However, the real question is what role government will play in fostering the development of those who need help. Are we going to truly step up to the plate and provide the skills and education necessary to make it in this world? I think we have no other choice.

Re: Pro-Life Rally Attracts Wide Base in Lancaster

I don’t oppose faith based action, in fact I sit on two boards for faith based agencies. The problem I have come to realize is that broad systematic problems such as poverty can only be patched by faith based agencies. Systematic problems of poverty such as deteriorating urban cores, insufficient employment opportunities, lack of quality education and crime (more of a symptom than a cause) cannot be solved without a larger effort. Thankfully, under Rendell the problems with deteriorating urban cores are being addressed, especially infrustructure. However, at every turn, efforts to improve our economy have been blocked by big businesses that fear competition from small businesses. Education reform has been met with stop gap approaches and ristrictive federal mandates. Every time Pennsylvania has the opportunity to be the leader in progressive policy that would reduce the symptom of abortion in our society, we are met with special interests such as developers, big businesses, local government officials who cling to the last bit of power that they can hold and even some of our own supporters like unions. Faith based action is good and should be encouraged. Heck we already fund faithbased activity (the one board I sit on is for a childcare center that is part of the mission of a group of local churches and receives Title XX funding… see also nursing homes that receive medicare). The banter about faith based initiatives was hollow at best and really did nothing but put out an image of compassion by the GOP. True compassion is not about charity or feeling good about helping somebody. True compassion is about recognizing that barriers to success exist to large parts of our population and actually doing something to correct the problems through social and political change.
