Rattlers rule? State may curb snake hunts

About halfway down a steep mountain valley, amid sun-warmed rocks and a tree stump, three timber rattlesnakes lay coiled, soaking up the mid-morning June sun.

Unafraid, Shane Hahn moved in.

With a tool that looked like a golf club with a hook, he gently grabbed the venomous snake near its head, using his other hand to lift its thick body. About 45 inches long, it had a black head and eyes, with dark crossbands — a black phase rattlesnake.

A member of the Keystone Reptile Club, Hahn, of Waynesboro, was demonstrating the sport of snake hunting on the weekend of the 34th annual Cross Fork Snake Hunt, an event he and his companions were helping to run.

But the state Fish and Boat Commission is worried about declining numbers of timber rattlesnakes, which are considered ''species of concern,'' and is proposing new restrictions. Hunt organizers fear the rule changes could hurt fundraising.

Oh man, it's a slow news day.

Re: Rattlers rule? State may curb snake hunts

Up here in tioga County, the Morris Rattlesnake Roundup is the town’s big annual event and fundraiser for their fire department. This year the snake handler who’s been running it for 50 years got bit twice and ended up in the hospital, so it’s future is unclear.

We do have a lot of rattlers here especially in the Pine Creek area. A woman once told me she had found two in her cellar, killed them and ate them (a shame to waste the meat). She said they most definitely did not taste like chicken!

Re: Rattlers rule? State may curb snake hunts

I’m glad this article had an impact on somebody’s community b/c we sure don’t get many rattlers in the LV.

Morris Rattlesnake Hunt

I recently retired from USAF and moved back East after many years away. I used to go to the snake hunt as a teenager and wanted to attend this year if able with my family. I was told that 2007 was the final year of the hunt. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If so my email is : avatheps@hotmail.com. Thank you very much for any info you may be able to provide. Hope to see you in Morris this June.
