Audit exposes PHEAA largesse

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, the state’s leading provider of financial loans and grants for post-secondary education, has given $7.5 million in bonuses to employees since 2004, Auditor General Jack Wagner said this morning.

Additionally, PHEAA spent $108,000 to entertain employees at Hersheypark in April — after the agency’s board had promised to clamp down on excessive spending.

Wagner called on the agency to end “excessive spending,” saying the money could be better spent on grants or loan forgiveness for Pennsylvania students. “If the management of PHEAA doesn’t get it,” Wagner said, “they shouldn’t be in management.”

All of the legislators who

All of the legislators who are on the PHEAA board need to have a challenger in the primary who will rake them over the coals on this issue. At best, they are asleep at the switch.
