Charging truckers and other travelers to drive down Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania is one step closer to reality. Gov. Ed Rendell and the Republican-led Senate reached an agreement on a $27.3 billion state budget, ending a standoff that led to a partial shutdown of state government…The agreement includes about $950 million annually during the next decade to fund work on roads and bridges, as well as mass transit. Revenue would not count against the budget. The money would come from sources that include boosting tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike by 25 percent in 2009 and turning I-80 into a toll road.

Unfortunately for the truckers
There aren’t many non-toll alternatives to cross Pennsylvania, either the Tpk or 80. I doubt many thru trucks will want to us US22, US30, US422 or PA6 as alternate routes.
pd
Unfortunate?
Roads cost us many millions of dollars and most are free to drive on. Trucks beat up the roads far more than consumer vehicles. They should have to pay for that.
Agreed
I don’t feel sorry for the truckers, just commenting on the hollowness of their threat to use alternate roads.
pd
Use GPS to toll trucks
Get a weight-distance tax that used the weight of the truck for the miles driven and they type of road it was on. It is all possible using GPS technology. Charge them their costs no matter what road or interstate. They are commercial vehicles using public highways for their profit, I think they should pay their way.
We do pay for it.
YOU HEARD OF FUEL TAX? try google. Semi Trucks are the reason we have this highway system. We have to pay a tax based on every mile drivin within any state.
Use fees make sense, if that
Use fees make sense, if that is where the money is spent once it is collected. I-80 has been a PA freebie for years, while you can’t go across OH, NY or MA without paying a toll.
But let me reiterate; while on a strictly personal level I’ll hate having to pay the toll, it does make sense…as long as that money goes back into improvements and maintanence, not the pockets of State Legislators…
Piltdown Man
Agreed Pilt
I agree, with the caveat being (as you said) keeping the toll revenue a true “dedicated” source for highway and mass transit funding. I’m not thrilled with the new tolls, as I don’t feel they address the structural problems with the TA and regional transit authorities, but I’ll take that over an increase in the sales tax or some other form of “revenue-generation”. By the way, didn’t the main argument against turnpike privitization center around the spectre of “massive” toll hikes on the state’s highways? Funny how we seemed to resolve to cope with the devil we know.
New Jobs
Your all missing the point. This is just another expansion of the Turnpike Commission. Has anyone else been to Harrisburg and seen the T.C. office bldg? The structure takes up an entire city block! We would be much better off eliminating ALL toll roads in PA and imposing an extra five cents gas tax to pay for our roads MINUS the salaries of thousands of Turnpike commission workers and managers.
That would be my plan if i were elected to the general assembly.
Cheerz
I am not sure that many know there are independent truck drivers starving to death right now.
Many of us have lost our homes and facing forclosue just because diesel fuel has went up. A tank of fuel 2 years ago was $300.00…now a tank is $650.00. Now with more and more states wanting to fund their revenue with tolls from roads are killing us.
We pay highway road usuage taxes yearly. $550.00 for every truck we own PLUS pay extra taxes at the pump. I believe the states are being irresposible with their spending of these $.
We as American Citizens need to make the states MORE accountable…..not have them charge us more money for their mis- use of money already given to them.Everyone wants safer trucks on the road. How are we going to accomplish that when every dime we make anymore is given back to the states? Tolls instead of maintainence????
Every truck tire we buy is $250-$350.00 each. We need 16 of them between truck and trailer.
I want to pay my fairshare….........but…...the government is getting too greedy. BTW.....trucks will be charged $150.00 going across. Cars will be $90.00.
We already pay…..at the pump….on our taxes…..when is enough…enough?????
Nice try
First, there hasn’t been any mention of potential tolls.
Second, there’s been a fuel surcharge added to each shipment that’s paid by the shipper, not the trucker, for awhile now.
I know because I paid it when I moved a couple of months ago.
That helps mitigate the cost of fuel.
Third, perhaps if you are “starving to death”, then maybe it’s time to sell your truck and just hire on as a driver since long distance truck drivers and people with CDLs are in demand.

Trucks don't pay what they should
The fact is that trucks damage the roads far more than what they pay in taxes and tolls. It is a form of transportation that can not cover the costs that it forces on the rest of us. Cars at around 3,000 pounds will pay $90.00. That’s about 3 cents per pound. Trucks at 80,000 pound should pay $2,400 on a pound-per-pound basis. At $150 for an 80,000 truck, the truck is paying only $60 more than an automobile. Look at the difference in road wear and tear, it does not make sense!! The public has to understand that there is a difference between a private motorist and a for-hire vehicle that is using our public roads to make a (slim) profit. Why should the motorist cover the costs for the trucks? Take time to search and read the Highway Cost Allocation Studies – see that trucks do not cover their costs!!!
Trucks use three or four as much fuel per ton-mile as freight rail. Let’s slowly but surely make the trucks pay their way, and educate the public, and let the freight migrate back to the railroads. This will save fuel, highway damage, and highway congestion. Oh, yes – about 5,000 people die each year in heavy truck accidents.
Trucks don't pay their share
Yes, they pay a hefty amount. But that doesn’t cover their true costs. Sad but true… they are going broke, the drivers, owners, brokers, all are hurting. Raise your rates or get out of business!! Stop wining, pay your share or park it. If you park it, someone else will haul it at a profit or it won’t move. Maybe they will load a boxcar instead, one boxcar can carry what four trucks can – and those four loads won’t be on our public highways. Think of the savings in road damage if just 12 percent of the trucks went into 1/4 that many more rail shipments.
Park your truck
Enough is enough. Park it. Stay off the road if you can’t make a profit. Park it, but park it on your property, not my public road. Someone else will haul it. Or it won’t move. Or it will go by rail.
"My" public road.....
I believe that is an oxymoron. If “it’s” parked, and “it” doesn’t move, one can only hope it was headed to you.
You're right they should park it, all of them
Oh and when you don’t get your milk, bread, cheese, textiles, manufactured goods, and all the other little things that come BY TRUCK to the stores and areas of commerce well I guess that’s too bad.
You do realize it will only get so far by rail than guess what YOU NEED TRUCKS TO GET IT THE REST OF THE WAY. As the son of someone who worked as a Roadway driver for years I have a little more insight on the business. You guys all want to say truck drivers are evil, well they are the ones keeping that food you buy in the store so you can buy it. I wonder how you would feel if someone just told you to stop doing your job. I wonder what you would say to your kids when you can’t buy them shoes because you have no money coming in. I wonder what you would do in that position. Sit on your high horse and keep telling the state that this is okay, when it’s not okay. The interstates weren’t built for states to make money off of. They were originally built to hasten our defense in a time of war. They were orginally used to transport troops and materials around the country. In fact the Trucking industry has more right to use the interstate than we do, because they were also built to keep product flowing to the stores during time of war. A job the trucking industry does.
Be willfully ignorant of the reasons why the Interstates were built, you only care about it because as your speeding down them at 80mph it gets you to the burger king faster so you can stuff your face with another triple whopper.
Just a few steps away APPROVED by the State Legislature
PA toll plan: $150 one-way toll for trucks?U.S. Congressman John Peterson, R-PA, says turnpike toll increases, recently approved by the state legislature, will mean that heavy trucks will pay nearly $148.75 for a one-way trip across the state – and that the toll would eventually increase to almost $200.
Peterson and fellow Republican Congressman Phil English of Pennsylvania are opponents of the toll increases, and of Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell’s plan to turn Interstate 80 into a toll road.
In a letter to Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority head Joseph Brimmeier, OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer called it “shameful” that Brimmeier denounced the two congressmen as “hypocritical” because they have introduced two bills that would block the plan to turn I-80 into a toll road.
Trucks should pay more
Heavy trucks are tearing up the road and not paying for it, they let others pay the costs. They only pay part of it and they still can’t make ends meet. Look at damage they cause to our public infastructure. They need to pay more to cover their costs. They need to charge more to move the freight so they cover their road damage costs, instead of letting the rest of the taxpayers do it for them.
That's about 50 cents/mile
Do you think a heavy truck or double trailer does 50 cents/mile damage to the turnpike? Because that’s what a $200 for the length of the turnpike, and we don’t know if this includes the NE extension, the toll amounts to. I expect they do that and more.
pd
.50 a mile
AND that is what the trucks pay $550.00 a year for.
It is called road usage taxes…...also how about the taxes they already collect for fuel???????I believe accountabilty of what is already being paid is the issue here.
PA has approx. 51,000 trucks registered in the state.
51,000 × 550= $280,500,00.00. That is quite a chunk of change. That is not even including the fuel taxes they collect.
I believe everyone should pay ther fair share. BUT.....if the states are being irresponsible with their money it is time that someone stands accountable.
The really sad thing here is that the shippers will end up paying the difference.
The cost will be reflected in the pricing going on the store shelf.
In the end it costs all of us. Sad but true.
Trucks are too costly to us all
Trucks can not afford to pay their way and stay in business. They operate in a false economy in which others will pick up their costs for being on the road. This is why the I-81 plan through Virginia didn’t work, and numerous other self-paid-for dedicated truck roads can not cover their costs. If I’m wrong, maybe the ATA and OOIDA should build a road (or buy and existing road)and charge a toll to let the trucks run over it. The fuel tax that the trucks pay is a joke. They pay about the same tax that an automobile pays, but they get about 1/4 the mileage. But they weigh much more than 4 time the weight of an automobile. They weigh 20 or 25 times as much – but they don’t pay 20 times the tax. Meanwhile they foul our air and tie up traffic. They delay the automobiles that pay more than their fair share of taxes. Local roads and city streets are paid for by real estate and sales taxes – the trucks use these roads for free.
Educate the public – stop the needless wear on our roads. Charge the trucks what they cost – they have to raise their rates. If things in the store cost more, that is the fair price of moving the merchandise. Better yet – shift the long-distance freight to rail. Save fuel and get the trucks off the highway.
Trucks are so uneconomical that they can’t even pay their drivers a decent wage. The whole trucking industry is dependent on drivers working for next to nothing and the trucks using public roads for less than the true costs of the road and maintenance. It is time to turn the page on this overly expensive form of transportation.
Read the highway cost allocation studies
Trucks don’t pay what they cost the taxpayers. Yes, they pay a lot of money in taxes, but they cost much more than they pay. Do the math for the automobiles and you will see that they pay more, much more. Do the math per pound and per mile driven. The trucks don’t cover their share.
Paying the toll
My friend and I are from Canada.Recently we took a road trip.We drove through Iowa, and did not pay the toll.(Not intentionally)Can anyone help me.I wanted to know the website we can go to and pay the fee online. Thanks
I didn't pay in Canada...
Hi –
Funny you should raise this. I was driving north of Toronto last summer and realized I was on the 4-0-something and it had automated toll collection (like EZPass here) but there didn’t appear to be any way to pay if you weren’t part of the system. I figured I’d get a letter in the mail at some point, but it never happened. I guess the assumption is that the lost revenue from tourists is outweighed by the efficiency of automatically collecting from commuters…
Pilt
I personally believe that
I personally believe that the revenue could have been better (and easier) to generate by requiring double plate car registrations… which would only, by the way, apply to new registrations. I hate the toll-highway idea!
Pay for what you use
The owners of motor vehicles should pay for what they use. Car registrations cost the same whether you make your living on the road or only drive to church on Sundays. Pay tolls, not fuel taxes, or a registration tax. Pay so much a pound for the vehicle for the distance it travels on our roads. Pay for what you use.
I-80 idea....
I just crossed the state on I-80 and it struck me; why not JUST charge the truckers? Forget about the cars. This would mean that locals, who use the route for daily travel, wouldn’t be inconvenienced or hassled, but the truckers who are using the route for commerce, would be paying a usage fee. Excuse me if this idea has been floated before, but it just suddenly made a lot of sense to me, as I was maneuvering my tiny car amongst a phalanx of giant trucks…
Pilt
I-80 Idea -
I-80 cost much more to build because it is designed to support the weight of trucks. Heavy trucks do the damage, not the cars, not the frost, not mother nature. Yes water gets into the cracks and breaks the pavement – but the heavy trucks are the cause of the cracks to start with. Make the trucks pay their fair share.
Ship by Rail
I watched a train, a long long train, of truck trailers on flat cars the other day. That is the way to move freight!! Also – it didn’t hold me up, none of those trailers were in front of me on the highway. And none of those trailers damaged the road.
Why are we allowing these long-distance trucks on our roads? There will always be trucks needed for local freight shipments, and to and from a rail yard. But the long-distance over the road truck should be a thing of the past. We can no longer afford their waste of fuel, road damage, and traffic delays.
I hate trucks
I hate the way some trucks are always in the passing lane. If they are in such bad financial shape because of the fuel costs, why not slow down to save fuel? I hate driving beside these trucks, and I’m tired of them complaining about their tough times. Why don’t they slow down to save fuel, and raise their rates to cover their costs? The impact on the cost of goods in the store will be minimal. Better yet – put the truck on a train for the longest portion of the haul. Use trucks only for local deliveries.
Trucking; Reality Check
Did someone make it “Let’s pick on Trucker’s” week?
Why don’t ALL of you narrow-minded people stop and consider how EVERY aspect of your life would be affected if the trucks just shut down tomorrow? How much does your job rely on deliveries made by those trucks? How much extra are you willing to pay to get your groceries, clothes, medical supplies and other goods transferred and transferred by rail? How long are you willing to wait to receive your goods? How about those of you who live in a major rail hub, and already have difficulties getting around, or waiting for some of those trains with a hundred cars, on a daily basis?
Road deterioration? I guess it’s easier to blame the truckers than the construction companies who cut corners on blacktop and stone, or who don’t do the proper preparation or finishing, or maybe the blacktop plant should be blamed for substandard materials, or maybe the PennDot inspectors for approving materials and workmanship that was subpar, or maybe it’s the sheer increase in volume of light-duty traffic, and quite possibly even the weather with the freezing and thawing. Find any road with deterioration, and it will be because of a combination of any of the above. I’ll bet you people blame the truckers when the Steelers lose!
As for “hating” trucks, I run I-76 and I-80 from Harrisburg to Ohio a couple times a month, and the truckers are usually the most courteous drivers on the road. They’re the ones you see swinging to the passing lane when a vehicle is broken down/parked along the roadside. Most light-duty traffic just goes barreling right by at 70mph, even if the left lane(s) is open; in spite of the fact it’s now a state law to move over if possible. The truckers are quicker to let you on an entrance ramp than the light-duty traffic, and the list goes on. The biggest danger from a tractor trailer is usually from careless, oblivious motorists who try to cut back in front of a truck too soon, or who follow too close, etc.
No, I’m not a trucker, married to a trucker, etc. I work in a medical practice. That said, I know, the cost of healthcare is ridiculous, AND if I didn’t work there, I would say the doctors are greedy, but I see first-hand the government requirements, and overhead costs and it’s not nearly as lucrative as many people think. Why don’t all of you complaining about the truckers put YOUR occupations out there, so you can be told what’s wrong with it, and how it’s contributing to the demise of our roadways, or driving our fuel prices up or for whatever else you are deeming the trucking industry to be responsible.
As far as I-80 being made into a toll road; I gladly pay the I-76 turnpike fee for the convenience of avoiding the two-lane congestion, and being assured the reoadway will be well-maintained and clear during the winter months. If making I-80 a toll road guarantees the same results, I’ll pay it. The question of HOW much to charge which vehicles is an entirely different issue.

Careful what you wish for........
You keep talking about getting the trucks off the road, just park them; if things keep going the way they are now, OUR (America’s) truckers may do just that. Shippers won’t revert to rail; it’s too expensive, too slow, and too inconvenient… they’ll just utilize all those Mexican trucks that are now allowed across the border. At least then you’ll have something else to whine about.
Just A Reminder...
You sons of bitches who keep bashing truckers need to remember one
thing…..if it were not for a trucker, you all would be NAKED,
HOMELESS, & STARVING !!! If u drink it,eat it,sleep in it,on it,or under it,wear it drive it & even wipe your ass with it…...
a proud trucker delivered it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Cause that
fucking train can’t get it to the grocery, hardware, clothing store.
Be reminded
When the cost gets too high, Americans find another way, so don’t try to jam your convoy shit down our throats, you hillbilly asshole.
