State Rep. David Levdansky on Tuesday suggested that House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese withdraw from his House race by Monday’s deadline, saying DeWeese has become a “liability” to the Democratic Caucus.Six other House Democrats have urged DeWeese to step down as majority leader, but Levdansky is the first to publicly ask DeWeese to drop out of his Greene County race against Republican Greg Hopkins as a result of the criminal charges filed last month against 12 people connected to the Democratic Caucus.
“A true leader does not unnecessarily put his troops directly in harm’s way for purely personal gain. Bill has become a liability for the members of the House Democratic Caucus,” said Levdansky, D-Elizabeth. “Leadership demands the courage to sacrifice for the common good, which in this case is the greater public that we all serve, and the members of the House Democratic Caucus.”

End of the Line for the "Wily Wordsmith"?
First Shapiro, now Levdansky. Does Rendell even have anything nice to say about Lord DeWeese anymore? A better question would center around DeWeese’s chances for re-election in the fall. His Republican opponent, Greg Hopkins, nearly unseated him two years ago, and it would be hard to argue that he won’t have the wind at his back once again this November. Greene County is “blue” as can be, but it tends to take on shades of red in national and most statewide races. Considering all that’s happened (and the fact that most of his own caucus, either overtly or implicitly, doesn’t even support the man anymore), my money is on Hopkins to dethrone DeWeese this time around. The shame of it is that I probably won’t have to pass many tissues around to my Dem friends on Election Night should Good Ol’ William descend into the depths of political oblivion.
