Judiciary Panel Backs Gay Marriage Ban

A proposal to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to ban gay marriages and civil unions received approval from a Senate committee Tuesday as supporters seek to revive an effort that stalled in 2006.

In a packed Judiciary Committee hearing, opponents tried, but failed, to delay a vote. The committee’s 10-4 vote, however, was just the first step in the long road to changing the state constitution, which ultimately would require a statewide referendum that could be held no earlier than next year.

Casting Out Lot With The Wretched

This is a stupid, asinine and petty measure that I wholly reject and disdain. I hope that it fails to even slither onto the ballot. The number of homosexuals living in Pennsylvania cannot be enough that the overwhelming heterosexual majority of the commonwealth somehow needs a constitutional amendment, the leave revocable of instruments of law, to secure their comfort and assert the social inferiority of homosexuals. Of course, the same smallness of their numbers makes the heat and abundance of the breath expended in their defense seem likewise excessive, although if the insecurely moralistic or intolerant attack with force out of proportion to the problem, then the opposition will be drawn into mounting an insensibly great defense.

I suspect that in truth the prominence of the matter is account of the relative ease wherewith matters that are purely of moral conduct may be understood and angrily argued over. There are no intricate statistical models or cost benefit analyses to be undertaken and interpreted, only our rawest and worst emotions. There is a case study to be had in the form of Massachusetts, but I imagine that if introduced into the discourse, it could for various reasons by easily dismissed and ridiculed into irrelevance.

My own preference is to remove the word and emotional notion of marriage from the canons of law as completely as it possible, then assign the legal qualities and privileges now associated to recognized marriages to civil unions, or a like term, that apply to all couples, whether homosexual or heterosexual. I doubt that such a measure would satisfy many people, but it is what I think to be the proper method to address the matter.

Thank GAWD

I was just saying to my heterosexual wife how I felt like our marriage was under assault because gay couples wanted gasp to have the same rights we enjoy. Sure enough, I looked out the window, and the sidewalk was full of homosexuals. They were waving torches and pitchforks, and chanting about how they wanted to drag my marriage out into the street and shoot it. This bill is the only thing that can guarantee straight marriages are protected from the mobs of homosexuals who want to destroy our otherwise perfect relationships.

Can I get an Ay-Men?

Boy are you right! Those gays are just trying to ruin this country. I mean, jeez, you figure these tax-paying homosexuals who have the same constitutional rights as we do must be crazy to want the same legally binding civil unions.

What nerve huh? I thank God for the likes of state senator Gordner, and state reps. Metcalfe and Rohrer. They sure know how to save us from the gay masses.

It’s an election year, this was so expected from the party of Lincoln (our first actually gay President).

If those Republicans in the legislature really hated gays though, they’d let them enter into civil unions. Chew on that.

What a dumb proposal!!

I moved here from another state. I was apalled by how backwards PA is in some parts of the state. Now, there is a group of misguided lawmakers who want to write discrimination into the state’s constitution. I presume misguided religious dogma is the basis of this move to legalize bias. Religious dogma has had a detrimental impact throughout history. This is just one more example.

Oh, the humanity!

...That two people of the same sex in a loving, committed, long term relationship should be able to marry. Thankfully the GOP will save us from this potential travesty.

Hey, I got an idea! How

Hey, I got an idea! How ‘bout we fix the roads and cut the runaway school taxes. Naaaa!! Let’s stop the millions of gay couples in the state from gettin’ married. Git r Dun!!

Hahaha

And people say we’ve got a liberal audience! ;-)

Cart Before the Horse

First, let me begin by saying that I do not support states sanctioning same-sex marriage. I believe the legal uniting of individuals, when performed by a priest, is intended to bring a man and a woman together for the purpose of having children and rearing families. The state’s DOMA law reflects this, and I’d argue rightly so. That said, I believe the current effort, led by a group of Republicans in the legislature, is nothing but election-year political opportunism. I could understand a concern if DOMA was in danger of being nullified or even if a suit was pending. However, I don’t believe that’s the case. For some Republicans, this is a way to “fire up the base”, and it’s pathetically transparent. As it pertains to secular “civil unions”, to be very honest, as a conservative, I just don’t get that worked up over it. If a judge wants to legally unite two individuals who love each other and pledge to be responsible to one another for the rest of their natural lives, who am I to say that shouldn’t carry the same legal or moral weight as a marriage performed in a church? As long as the government isn’t storming into my church and ordering my pastor to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies, this issue is really of no concern to me. Now, if a judge overturns DOMA and it appears that action might put us on a road toward such government-mandated action, then a constitutional amendment such as this might make more sense. Until that time, the state has many more pressing issues than a pronouncement from a judge that may or may not occur in the future. If a committed same-sex couple wants legal recognition of their relationship (and wishes to enjoy the benefits thereof), I simply cannot fathom any self-important blowhard vetoing their union on the grounds that it simply “makes them uncomfortable”. Isn’t the GOP supposed to be the party that fosters committed relationships and promotes the concept of marriage? I guess we should have been more “gender-specific” with that line of the party platform.

It’s a sad fact that

It’s a sad fact that homosexual life spans are thirty or forty years less than heterosexuals’.

Making life-shortening lifestyle more acceptable will simply end up with more lives tragically cut short.

I’m not sure I understand

I’m not sure I understand your comment. I don’t believe homosexuality is a matter of choice, but rather a preference born into someone. Many fight it their whole lives and die with it forever hidden, while others “come out” and live happy lives. I don’t think being less acceptable will “save lives”. All this if I’m reading your comment the way you intended.

Massachusetts Familes and Children have all died off...

just like the Republicans told us they would if they allowed gay marriage.

Funny, the divorce rate in Massachusetts has actually dropped since gay marriage was allowed.

Hmmm, guess that kills one of their arguments!

Don’t worry, I am sure they are krafting many new falsehoods to sell to those of us in PA.

Typical...

Love how our politicans divert attention away from real threats. Why should they worry about the home lending crisis, property taxes, healthcare and college cost.

I mean do these issues really affect them. I am sure gay marriage is more of a threat!!!!

ATTN: PA POLITICANS WHO PROPOSED THIS AND CONTINUE TO WASTE THE TIME AND MONEY OF TAXPAYERS :

Get over it and leave these people alone! FIX REAL PROBLEMS, STOP TRYING TO PLAY GOD!
