Regola ends re-election bid, blames media

Kind of surprising.

An update from the P-G:
Regola withdraws

Westmoreland County GOP officials scrambled
to address reports that state Sen. Bob Regola of Hempfield will end his re-election bid Monday.

Citing unnamed sources, Capitolwire, a Harrisburg-based online news service, reported Friday that Regola is expected to withdraw as a candidate because recent polls showed he is trailing Democratic challenger Tony Bompiani and cannot defeat him. The news service reported Regola’s close friend and GOP ally, Senate President Pro Tem Joe Scarnati of Jefferson County, determined that even a campaign budget of $1 million could not secure a November victory.

Surprised

I’m surprised, too. He was acquitted in the gun trial and I didn’t think he had significant weaknesses – at least not any big enough to remove him from the ballot.

Regola Out!

Thank God, It is a shame that he is doing this just because he is going to lose, and not out of the respect of the Farrell Family.

Bompiani

I was pretty shocked to read about the poll results. I’ll bet a lot of people think it’s Bob Pompeiani, the sportscaster, NOT the actual candidate, Tony Bompiani, who is running. :)

Good Riddance

Another self-centered pol who put his own self-interest ahead of the public interest, even after his personal irresponsible behavor with a deadly weapon directly led to the tragic death of a child. Maybe his behavior was not criminal (although a verdict of “not guilty” does not mean “innocent,“but simply that the prosecution’s evidence was not beyond a reasonable doubt). But I am not surprised that his constituents would give about the same prospect of success as O.J. Simpson. He should have resigned when charged criminally, but like too many other politicians (e.g. Bill DeWeese), he thinks that we are there to serve him, instead of his being there to serve us.

Regola's Fate/New Opportunity

If Regola intended to go this route, he probably should have stepped down before his trial began. That said, if he stayed in the race, his name (rightly or wrongly, depending upon your point of view) would forever be associated with indifference to life at worst and carelessness at best, neither of which are particularly endearing to voters. However, if Regola’s exit opens the door for Kim Ward to enter the General Assembly, it will be a good thing, in my opinion. Kim already has the name recognition and political experience to run a solid race on short notice and would probably give the GOP it’s best shot at holding the seat in November.
