Stories contain quotes from Lynn Swann, TJ Rooney, NAACP members, as well as Assembly members across party lines and ethnicities.
The issue of race can be thin ice for a politician.Did Gov. Ed Rendell fall through it this week?
On Tuesday, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published Rendell comments that there are some conservative whites in Pennsylvania “who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate.” He referred to the Democratic presidential contest between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
An attempt by The Patriot-News to contact Rendell was not successful as reaction to his comments quickly built into a national media topic yesterday. In late afternoon, Rendell appeared on Chris Matthews’ MSNBC television show, “Hardball.”
“For this to be a big brouhaha. ... Neither she nor I would want anything like this,” Rendell said on the show, referring to Clinton, whom Rendell has endorsed.

Quick, close your eyes...
Maybe this story will go away. If that works, close them again so that Rendell goes away too. Maybe he can take The DeWeenie and The Salty Pretzel (Perzel) with him.
Reinforcement of Racisim
Rendell’s statement regarding the willingness of central Pennsylvania whites to vote for a black man, reinforces racisim big time. The discussion regarding the intent of Rendell in making the statement is not relevant. The quiery should be why Rendell does not realize this and encourage central Pennsylvania whites to vote for substance.
I don’t believe anything Rendell says on this matter. He has benefitted from the black vote and relied on the central Pennsylvania white vote for his election and reelection. There are just some things you don’t give public voice to, as a leader, and when you do, you show your own intolerance and ignorance.
Racism In Pennsylvania
PA IS one of the most racist states in the country. Just travel the turnpike and count the non-whites working on the road (one one hand, no thumbs), then go into Ohio and behold the difference! Blacks and women driving the heavy equipment in other states. Not PA… The KKK alive and kicking in Punxsutawney, Lancaster, and elsewhere. Blacks can’t get into unions, haven’t been able to for decades. Open your eyes! There’s no way they will vote for Obama. He can’t even get on the ballot in some cases.
Monarchy
“In most monarchies, the monarch holds control and their position for life and passes the responsibilities and power of the position to their children or family when they die.”
In 1988, we had George Bush (Father)
In 1996, we had Bill Clinton (Husband)
In 2000, we had George W. Bush (Son)
In 2008, Hillary Clinton is running for President (Wife)
So, from 1988 to 2012, we have the possibility that two families will have controlled this country for 24 years. What is our country coming to?
Amen
I’ve been saying the same thing.
Even Worse, think about the possibilities:
89-93 G Bush
93-01 W Clinton
01-09 GW Bush
Then:
09-17 H Clinton
17-25 J Bush
25-33 C Clinton
....
Didn’t the founding fathers have this thing about the inherited divine right of knigs?
Monarchy
Dear god, I hope not ! I admit, I have heard whisperings of Chelsea Clinton entering politics. Whatever. But JEB BUSH???? If this country ever elects another Bush into the presidency, I’m sorry but I’m taking my family and moving to CANADA! The citizens of this country can not be that ignorant———can they How ‘bout $6.00 a gallon for gasoline and another war IN THE WRONG COUNTRY !! Yeh baby…..
monarchy
just because you feel that way is no reason to for a candidate that is not qualified to lead our coutry at this time
the right question is what is our country becoming when we can elect a man because he gives great speeches, has a background we don,t know about, has ties to a church that stand for black supremacy and also farakan, has ties to muslims.
sen clinton is running on her own records(35 years of public service) not on race
the racism here are the black (which i’m one of) voting for obama in large numbers base on his color
a follower among us
You watch too much American television. Speeches are all the candidates are doing right now, it is called campaigning. If you can so easily point the finger at Obama running on race, then you should be willing to admit Clinton is running on gender.
Gender
At least she is a woman all the time. And she is paying for it dearly, she has to endure all the sexiest comments from the pin head media and others like you. Obama is black, however; he is also white. These days he is using the color that favors him, therefore; he “uses” black.
Monarchs
you are cotrdicting yourself. They don’t need to run for anything, they are ther for life. It is clear that this in not the case, do I need to explain? Bush, Clinton, others. However, I would love to have other clinton presidency, those where very good times.
Chelsea? No way, Roger all the way.
Um, hello, what about Roger Clinton? I think he plays guitar. Maybe he could campaign like Bob Roberts.
RACISM ALIVE AND WELL AT OUR STATE CAP.
Who pays you to try and throw a blog on a seperate issue all to gether. Our Gov Fast Eddie THE MOBSTER is told what to do by his party.Do not thinik this wasn’t thought out and planned by his friends the Clintons.Remember the Military Vote in Florida, in 2000,where he and the other mobster, from Chicago ran like a couple little boys to do the dirty work of the party.Racisim in PA, alive and well at our State Capital.Mr.Rendell you have put up a new intangible fence around party politics.NO thank you for your Putsch against your own.
I'm glad Rendell said this
There is definately racism in this state, but far more prevalent is bigotry engendered by ignorance. Why do you think we have 501 school districts in Pennsylvania? Because some “suburban” residents don’t want their kids going to school with “urban” (be that big or small urban area) kids.
I hope Rendell’s comments makes Pennsylvanians take a good hard look in the mirror at ourselves.
pd
ill conceived
we have 501 school districts becuase of racism? that is a bold accusation. You have ignored sprawl, which has been an influence on why there are so may school districts. People simply do not want to live in the cities, as the choice for more land and better housing exists in the outlying areas. But hey, you keep believing whatever helps you further your friend’s (Rendell’s)statements.
Racism still exists, we know; you do not have to be the star of the Sherlock Holmes books to figure that one out.
Racism isn’t thriving or
Racism isn’t thriving or is it dead. It is one of those human traits that perhaps evolution will slowly weed out of us. But when someone in a political office like Rendell says the things he does and Rendell isn’t the only one, it’s proof that some of us evolve quicker than others. Hopefully, those that evolve into a state of mind that is void of racism will slowly outnumber those that don’t or won’t evolve. Is a white Corvette faster than a black Corvette? Perhaps someday color won’t mean a thing…but sadly not today.
Race Baiting
Rendell was just following the Clinton playbook of race baiting. First Bill compares Obama to Jackson. Then, Hilary dismisses Obama’s Louisiana victory in similar terms – the state has a lot of blacks. So, leave it to their crony Fast Eddy to remind Pennsylvania Democrats that they could be causing property values in the vicinity of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to crater if they vote for Obama. As a Republican who plans to vote for Obama, I think that is reprehensible. Why are the Democrats so silent about this?
race baiting
mind you it was obama that started the race issue, before you jump to any conclusion, i am an african american and work among many. the race issue came about when oprah in SC called on all blacks to vote into action MLK’s dream.
it is unfair to suggest the Gov is racist.obam in iowa hid his color on the ballots and the in SC went all the way to say hi is black.it seems he goes where the wind blows.
many blacks have made the same comment the gov made and have gone ahead to support obama alledging there is a movement and they want to be among the people to elect a black president. i for one will not vote for obama because he is black, that will be an injustice to our country, i will vote for the MOST qualified, and that is hillary
yes, absolutely
You said, and I second it. Very well said!
I can hear the resident of
I can hear the resident of 1599 Pennsylvania Ave mumbling…“there goes the neighborhod”
Racism is alive
Look at the work around the stadium in Pittsburgh, I have not seen a person of color working at all. Even on the construction that was going on when 376 had lane closures. Its sad, I have a degree and experience and can’t find a job, go figure. My unemployment ran out in Jan.
See how racisim is read article in this new letter of below
A former executive at a Schuylkill County highway construction firm pleaded guilty Wednesday to helping organize a scheme that prosecutors say improperly obtained for his company $121 million in federal highway contracts set aside for minority-owned companies.
Construction is one of
Construction is one of those business sectors where racism is opening displayed. Most white owned mechanical contractors have a minority side of their business. These minority divisions go a long way in contracting city and state work when a minority participation of 35% or more is required. Some of these minority divisions actually do the work, but so many are nothing more than an office and a “Token” black individual that the particpation is run through and the work is performed by the white owned firm. If the black construction community made it impossible for these bogus minority divisions to exist, it would give the genuine minority contractors a greater shot at city and state contracts.
Racist but NOT sexist..we've come so far
OK is Rendell saying that he believes PA is STILL Racist but NOT sexist?? I thought this was the north
What about what the the conservatives say in the “racist” south…or is it not all as we see it.
So is Rendell saying that the one’s who DID vote for Obama were actually openminded and PA should remain closed and ignorant as it is?
What an idiot!
Who Cares
The point isn’t whether some Pennsylvanians ‘arent ready’ to elect a black man, but why should we care? There will be plenty of people that won’t vote for Obama, just like many didn’t vote for Kerry or Edwards. Didn’t matter then and it wont matter in November.
Go Obama!
I do care
That is why I say: GO GILLARY!
Go, go Hillary!
You have proven to be the best.
Ok, as a proud
Ok, as a proud pennsylvanian let me say this… there is racism in PA. Is it wrong? thats a matter of opinion. PA is mostly white, and many people want it to stay that way. What is wrong with that? I have lived in states in the south that are 60 percent black. Guess what? PA doesent have half the problems those states do as far as crime, poverty, unemployment, gangs. So whats wrong with keeping PA white. NOTHING! What the gov. said is fine. He didnt make a racial remark. But wait i forgot… in modern day america anything anyone says about a black person is automaticly racist… because of dumb white people like yourselfs. Its almost as if you white people who talk like this want to be the minority. I dont understand you people. You really make the white race look bad… you might as well consider yourselfs black.
The problem is
You are equating crime, poverty, unemployment and gangs with a person’s skin color.
They are more indicative of income disparity and poverty, and exist in purely ‘white’ communities as well.
(And I don’t believe statistics back you up on the assertion that PA has less than half the problems of southern states. )
