Ravenstahl vetoes limits on political contributions

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl on Monday vetoed a City Council ordinance that sought to limit the size of political contributions to city candidates.

“The ordinance before me today is fraught with problems,” Ravenstahl wrote in a four-page message to council members. “It provides an unfair competitive advantage for the wealthy and will have a chilling effect on the labor movement.”

Council members narrowly approved the contribution limits last week in a 5-4 vote, meaning the required two-thirds vote to override Ravenstahl’s veto is unlikely.

The ordinance proposed to cap contributions from individual donors at $2,000 per election. Political action committees would have been limited to donations of $5,000 per election.
