The state Senate this evening voted to table a bill that would have amended the state constitution to ban gay marriage. The main sponsor, Sen. Michael Brubaker, R-Lancaster, said it had become clear to him that the bill would not pass in the House and he therefore saw no point to a lengthy debate in the Senate.
Up to 14 amendments were planned on the bill, which would have meant a long night.
One of the amendments was by Sen. Vincent Fumo, D-Philadelphia, who proposed that Pennsylvania outlaw most divorces. His amendment would “outlaw the dissolution of most marriages in Pennsylvania,” he said in a news release. That would mean there would be few legal ways for the divorce of a married couple, a man and a woman.

I think I love Senator Fumo!
I am glad to see this hate-based bill go this direction. I should have never made it out of committee. I was so disappointed to see that happen.
Outlaw divorce.
Finally someone knows how to “defend marriage.”
Good for you Senator Fumo! Good for us Pennsylvania!
Fumo
He does deserve a pat on the back for this one. What is the best way to address Brubaker’s ridiculous proposal than with an equally ridiculous one. Is it any wonder why PA government is such a mess. This is how our represenatives in H’burg spend their time. This is the kind of BS that shows why we need term limits.

Does this mean that gay marriage at present is not banned?
Defense of Marriage Act
Pennsylvania has passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) several years ago. The latest plan is to include this discrimination in the state constitution. This would mark the first time that the constitution would be used in Pennsylvania to take deny rights to a minority group.
Thanks to the hard work of some members of the state house and senate (as well many concerned citizens) the bill is stalled, but not dead. I know that the hate-filled groups who are developed this legislation are gearing up to push it again in the near future.
Excellent point
The Constitution is no place for this nonsense. By the way, doesn’t the state still have approximately 800,000 uninsured residents?
Also an excellent point
As previously mentioned in this thread, the legislature can’t handle serious issues (ie: the uninsured) so they waste their time and taxpayer money debating a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Perhaps we can get Fumo to propose a ban on the uninsured. Maybe that will get their attention.
