With the attention of the city shifting to the election and the change over that’s about to happen, it’s going to be very difficult for Street to accomplish anything in the next few months.

Mayor Street traveled to Reading last week, where he met with the Pennsylvania mayors of four nearby cities and got a commitment from the state’s House Judiciary Committee chairman to introduce new gun-control legislation this fall.

But few people here knew he went. Fewer still know what he did.

Which can be a problem after a weekend that saw seven people killed and 36 others wounded.

Perhaps nothing dogs Philadelphia’s lame-duck mayor right now more than the perception that on the city’s most serious issue, he isn’t a force to be reckoned with.

In Baltimore, with violence worsening, that city’s mayor last week ousted the police chief.
