Stating the obvious, Joe!
Fresh off accepting his party’s vice presidential nomination, Sen. Joe Biden put a charge into Pennsylvania’s Democratic delegates today, telling them at a breakfast speech here that “you are going to [see] a whole hell of a lot of me” during the next two months.“We cannot win without winning Pennsylvania,” Biden said. “It is that simple. You are going to have all the resources this campaign has available to it.”
Biden laid his Scranton roots on thick in the 13-minute speech, telling the crowd how he learned his “political consciousness” in the coal country while listening to his grandfather talk politics at the kitchen table.
The mayor of Philadelphia was sitting in the lobby of a downtown hotel yesterday morning, waiting for a panel discussion to begin, when he got a reminder of how different this Democratic convention has been for him from previous ones.Michael Nutter received a call from a top aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton, asking if he would serve as master of ceremonies for a pre-roll-call reception of Clinton supporters from across the country. There, the New York senator would release her delegates and tell them she was voting for Barack Obama.
Nutter, an avid Clinton backer during the primaries, agreed to the request. read more »
Just got a text message that Joe Biden will speak at this morning’s PA delegation breakfast. They’ve had speakers join them each morning; we’ll be in the room and I’ll try to get some video if possible.
Sorry it took so long to get this up… here’s the text of the Guv’s speech last night:
It was eight years ago that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney came to Philadelphia to accept their party’s nomination. Onstage at that convention, we heard lots of talk about energy. The Republican platform itself called for expanding the renewable energy tax credit. But once elected, they broke their energy promises to the American people and let big oil determine our national energy policy. read more »
The first roll call vote of the Democratic National Convention is happening now; though Senator Clinton released her delegates and asked them to vote for Senator Obama, I don’t know how Pennsylvania will vote. My guess is that they’ll vote mostly for Senator Clinton during the first round.
It was Pennsylvania night at the Democratic National Convention, with both Sen. Bob Casey and Gov. Rendell doing their bit for Barack Obama, each in his own way.The senator delivered a personal and wide-ranging talk, the governor a tougher and more policy-oriented address, focusing on the single subject of energy.
For Casey, the appearance held special significance.
Sixteen years ago, at the party’s convention in New York, his father, an outspoken opponent of abortion, was not allowed to speak.
During this morning's press gaggle (about 10 minutes ago), I asked Senator Casey to give us a preview of what he'll talk about in his speech today. And that's the patented Shaky-cam... pre-coffee and food this morning. :-)
Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey was heading for the Pepsi Center for an interview with NBC News yesterday, but his van was not going to get anywhere near the convention arena because it did not have the proper red placard.Running late, he jumped out and started on foot for a security checkpoint that shimmered in the heat a 15-minute hike away.
“It’s blue-collar to walk in,” Casey joked. He was right on message.
I’m dead tired, but I do want to say that Michelle’s speech is incredible. I’ll re-read it and write more later or tomorrow morning…
For better or worse, we’re sitting right next to CNN. Lots of crowds trying to take pictures of them, etc, but it’s fun. And on the other side of us is Katie Couric.
