Philly union loses suit on election money

A federal judge this week threw out a lawsuit filed by the electricians union, seeking to keep secret details of how it spent $2.4 million in last year’s elections.

A political action committee for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 98, claimed that state and local laws requiring the disclosure violated its constitutional rights.

Chief Judge Harvey Bartle III rejected that claim as “patently inconsistent” with previous federal rulings on requirements for political action committee reporting.

Local 98 is led by John Dougherty, a well-known player in city politics who failed in April in a bid to win the Democratic primary election for the First State Senatorial District seat being vacated by state Sen. Vince Fumo.  read more »


Contractor admits giving Johnny Doc a price break

A Philadelphia contractor pleaded guilty yesterday to a plan to spare labor leader John J. Dougherty the full cost of extensive renovations to Dougherty’s home.

But the plea by Donald J. “Gus” Dougherty Jr., a longtime friend of John Dougherty’s who is not related to him, does not mean he will cooperate in the federal probe of the union chief. Indeed, the narrowly framed plea means he might not even surface again as prosecutors pursue the investigation.

After the contractor pleaded guilty, a spokesman for John Dougherty said the union official knew nothing of Gus Dougherty’s intent to give him a discount.

“This was Gus’ plan and Gus’ plan alone,” said Frank Keel, spokesman for the powerful business manager of Local 98 of the electricians union.  read more »

It’s almost primary day here in the Fifth District and another organization is making it known that Rick Vilello is the man they want down in Washington, D.C. fighting for them. We just received word that Rick has been endorsed by UA Local 520 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. Headquartered in Harrisburg, Local 520 represents working people in 23 central Pennsylvania counties. Some of the companies they do work for on a regular basis include CVS, Wegmans, and my alma mater, Penn State.  read more »
