Auditor General wants sex offenders to wear GPS bracelets

State Auditor General Jack Wagner, state Sen. Jane Orie and other officials are urging the Legislature to require convicted sex offenders to wear ankle bracelets containing “global positioning system” technology for five years after being released from jail.

Mr. Wagner, a former state senator from Beechview, released a report today saying that in June, the state had “lost track of 923, or nearly 10 percent, of the state’s approximately 9,800 registered sex offenders.”  read more »


PA-05: McCracken for Congress -- Weekly Update -- June 22nd 2008

This past week had important events scheduled every day ending with a very busy weekend. Here is a brief rundown of the highlights of the week:

The first major joint debate between the 2 candidates in the 5th Congressional District was held on Tuesday at the CBICC luncheon. The event was broadcast later that evening on PCN. The feedback I’ve received is that the debate clearly showed the contrast where I stand on the important issues, both regional and national, and where my opponent stands. The important topics addressed included healthcare, the Iraq war and the growing crisis of increasing gas and energy costs.  read more »


Jack Wagner: Save lives, not funds

Saying saving lives is more important than saving money, state Auditor General Jack Wagner on Wednesday urged the state to reverse its January decision to remove lifeguards from all but one of its 37 state parks with lake beaches.

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which eliminated lifeguards in 22 state parks from 1999 to 2007, announced it would remove them at 15 more parks this summer, including Beltzville in Carbon County and Tuscarora in Schuylkill County.

The additional cuts would save $800,000, Conservation and Natural Resources said.

Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie, which has strong currents, would be the only one to keep lifeguards.  read more »

The headline says it all as it was a very busy and sometimes hectic week. I started out the week Sunday and Monday in Harrisburg where I was attending the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania spring conference. I really wish I could have been in State College to see Senator Barack Obama’s historic visit to Penn State but, I had already scheduled to attend the CCAP conference several weeks ago. I’ve heard from people who attended and they were all still buzzing late in the week from the rally.  read more »


Fumo rips auditor general for audit of PHEAA

A state senator on the board of Pennsylvania’s student loan agency criticized an ongoing state audit of the agency’s spending practices Thursday, alleging that it’s politically motivated.

Sen. Vincent Fumo, D-Philadelphia, said the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s spending on business travel, entertainment and promotions have helped boost its revenues.

State Auditor General Jack Wagner announced last April that his office would audit PHEAA, citing news reports of lavish spending. The audit is expected to be completed by the end of June.  read more »
