Philly union loses suit on election money

A federal judge this week threw out a lawsuit filed by the electricians union, seeking to keep secret details of how it spent $2.4 million in last year’s elections.

A political action committee for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 98, claimed that state and local laws requiring the disclosure violated its constitutional rights.

Chief Judge Harvey Bartle III rejected that claim as “patently inconsistent” with previous federal rulings on requirements for political action committee reporting.

Local 98 is led by John Dougherty, a well-known player in city politics who failed in April in a bid to win the Democratic primary election for the First State Senatorial District seat being vacated by state Sen. Vince Fumo.  read more »

Contractor admits giving Johnny Doc a price break

A Philadelphia contractor pleaded guilty yesterday to a plan to spare labor leader John J. Dougherty the full cost of extensive renovations to Dougherty’s home.

But the plea by Donald J. “Gus” Dougherty Jr., a longtime friend of John Dougherty’s who is not related to him, does not mean he will cooperate in the federal probe of the union chief. Indeed, the narrowly framed plea means he might not even surface again as prosecutors pursue the investigation.

After the contractor pleaded guilty, a spokesman for John Dougherty said the union official knew nothing of Gus Dougherty’s intent to give him a discount.

“This was Gus’ plan and Gus’ plan alone,” said Frank Keel, spokesman for the powerful business manager of Local 98 of the electricians union.  read more »

Fumo: Don't Vote For Johnny Doc

I call these “undorsements.” Also, just because Fumo has never said he endorses Farnese, the proof is in the pudding. The media should step up and say that Fumo has endorsed – getting 16 Senate members to raise money for someone and telling people to vote for him is an endorsement…

State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo is imploring residents of his district to vote against his longtime foe John J. Dougherty in the race to succeed him, labeling him “a bully, a thug and evil.”  read more »

Dougherty Backed by Ward Leaders

Hmmm the old time political leaders backed the union boss. What a surprise!

The committee’s support traditionally boosts a candidate’s profile among party loyalists and with get-out-the-vote efforts on primary day.

But the higher-profile presidential primary this year is expected to draw more voters than usual, including many not inclined to follow the party’s guidance.

Dougherty, business manager of the city’s electricians union, was jubilant outside party headquarters on the 1400 block of Walnut Street.  read more »

Farnese ad lambastes Dougherty for link to fed investigation

Attorney Lawrence Farnese is turning up the heat in his state Senate race, with a scorching ad aimed at opponent John Dougherty, business manager of the electricians union.

The 30-second spot, slated for heavy repetition on cable television for the next week, links Dougherty to a pending federal investigation and notes that his union has been cited repeatedly for violating federal labor laws.

Dougherty and his campaign aides refused to address the specific charges but attacked Farnese for negative campaigning.

“We expected this sort of mudslinging in lieu of real ideas to move the district forward,” campaign manager Brian Hickey said in a prepared statement.

The new ad opens with video of children playing in a sun shower and a logo from Dougherty’s campaign.  read more »

Shark Attack! Politicos Line Up for Fumo's Seat

First Anne Dicker. Then Joe Vignola. Then John Dougherty. And now Larry Farnese.

As of Monday, four people were officially circulating petitions to run for South Philadelphia’s First District Senate seat.

In some corners, that is being read as evidence that more and more politicos are hedging their bets that Sen. Vincent Fumo, with 139 counts hanging over his head, won’t run for re-election after all.

All evidence is to the contrary.

Dougherty Readies Fumo Challenge, But Is It Real?

John Dougherty, leader of Local 98 of the electricians’ union, began circulating nominating petitions last weekend for a possible challenge to State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo in the April 22 Democratic primary.

The move raises the spectre of a showdown between two powerful politicians whose clashes have become part of local lore.

Yesterday, the speculation was about whether Dougherty seriously intended to challenge Fumo for his First Senatorial District seat, or was simply taking a preemptive action should the senator decline or be unable to seek reelection because of his legal problems.
