Farnese ad lambastes Dougherty for link to fed investigation

Attorney Lawrence Farnese is turning up the heat in his state Senate race, with a scorching ad aimed at opponent John Dougherty, business manager of the electricians union.

The 30-second spot, slated for heavy repetition on cable television for the next week, links Dougherty to a pending federal investigation and notes that his union has been cited repeatedly for violating federal labor laws.

Dougherty and his campaign aides refused to address the specific charges but attacked Farnese for negative campaigning.

“We expected this sort of mudslinging in lieu of real ideas to move the district forward,” campaign manager Brian Hickey said in a prepared statement.

The new ad opens with video of children playing in a sun shower and a logo from Dougherty’s campaign.  read more »

Clinton, McCord & Farnese backed by LGBT Democrats

Pennsylvania state Senate candidate Larry Farnese has received the endorsement of the Liberty City Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club.

Farnese, who was endorsed Monday night, faces two Democratic opponents, electricians union leader John Dougherty and political activist Anne Dicker, in the April 22 primary to represent the First Senate District. The district has a significant gay and lesbian population.

The Liberty City group also voted to endorse Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, and announced that it would co-sponsor a presidential forum at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow at Woody’s, a gay bar on 13th Street near Walnut Street.  read more »

Opponents Accuse Farnese of Being a Fumo Stand-in

With State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo not seeking reelection, his allies have been lining up behind the candidacy of Center City lawyer Larry Farnese in the Democratic primary.

Fumo has not publicly indicated any preference in the race for the high-profile First District, but it is no secret that the animosities between him and Dougherty run deep and that Dicker has been a staunch critic.  read more »

Forget state House race - Farnese to take on Fumo

After a week of indecision whether to run for the state House or the Senate, attorney Lawrence M. Farnese Jr. is going for the bigger prize, the Senate seat now held by Vince Fumo.

A source close to the campaign said last night that Farnese will drop his run against state Rep. Babette Josephs and join the campaign against Fumo and two other challengers for the Democratic nomination – electricians union leader John Dougherty and anti-casino activist Anne Dicker.

The primary election is April 22. The unopposed Republican candidate is Jack Morley.  read more »

Shark Attack! Politicos Line Up for Fumo's Seat

First Anne Dicker. Then Joe Vignola. Then John Dougherty. And now Larry Farnese.

As of Monday, four people were officially circulating petitions to run for South Philadelphia’s First District Senate seat.

In some corners, that is being read as evidence that more and more politicos are hedging their bets that Sen. Vincent Fumo, with 139 counts hanging over his head, won’t run for re-election after all.

All evidence is to the contrary.
