Grand jury: Veon aide coerced staff to 'volunteer'

Around House Democratic Whip Mike Veon’s office, they had a nickname for Jeff Foreman — ‘‘The Grim Reaper.’‘

During campaign season, Foreman would work his way through his boss’ offices on the Capitol’s fourth floor, court documents show. Stopping at each desk, he’d ask each employee if they wouldn’t mind ‘‘volunteering’‘ to help elect Democrats.

Former Veon Challenger is back

The dilemma has deepened for Democrats hoping to retain a state Senate seat.

Jay Paisley, a Beaver County political figure regarded as a fighter for reform, plans to enter the 47th Senate District race as an independent to challenge Rep. Sean Ramaley, the Democratic nominee and one of 12 people charged in a legislative corruption scandal.

Paisley’s entry will make it a three-way race among him, Republican nominee Elder Vogel Jr. and Ramaley — or a replacement Democratic nominee if the beleaguered candidate drops out of the race.  read more »

More than 80 e-mails obtained by the Post-Gazette show how the Veon campaign drew dozens of state workers from Harrisburg and beyond to Beaver Falls in spring and fall of 2006 to work for his reelection. Most of those were later among the roughly 700 state employees who received large, taxpayer-funded bonus payments, ostensibly for outstanding state work, even while some of them spent little time at their state jobs that year.  read more »

Democratic panel pays off Veon's campaign debt

The state House Democrats’ campaign panel late last year paid off the campaign debt of former Rep. Mike Veon, who now makes his living lobbying the governor and Legislature.

The House Democratic Campaign Committee in November and December paid $40,683 to retire Veon’s campaign debt, according to Veon’s report filed recently with the state election bureau. Veon could not be reached Wednesday.  read more »
