Obama

Gene Ludwig, Former US Comptroller of the Currency, Endorses Obama

As someone who was raised in York, Pennsylvania, and proud of it, I want to explain why I believe it is so important to Pennsylvania and America for Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States, and why I so strongly support him.  read more »

McCain's been tested?

Well that’s the latest marketing approach from the “reinvent your campaign every day” smart boyz at McCain Central.

The paraphrase is; “I’ve been tested, so our enemies won’t come after us.”

Excuse me, but what tests is he specifically referring to? The ones his oncologist did?

The man has been a US Senator. It is not a leadership type position. He has never had to make life-altering, nation-securing decisions. He, like Obama and other 98, deal with serious issues, but they never have to be the ONE whose ass is on the line. So, John, shut up. I have a hard time taking you seriously as a “man who has been tested” when you sing “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” though it is instructive in the way he views the world….  read more »

Tom Ferrick on why Obama will win PA

John McCain and Sarah Palin spent Tuesday campaigning in Pennsylvania, but they should put their time to better use. It’s over in Pennsylvania and the winner will be Barack Obama.

The public polls say it. The political experts say it. In private, even Republican leaders concede it. Pennsylvania’s 21 electoral votes are going to Obama.  read more »

We Can't Afford to Privatize Social Security

Voters of all ages face a critical decision in November, namely, which candidate, Barack Obama or John McCain, will best protect Social Security.
Like many Republicans, Senator McCain has supported President Bush’s proposal for partial privatization. This would allow workers to invest as much as a third of their payroll contribution into stocks and bonds. Creating these accounts would cost at least a trillion dollars.  read more »

OBama vs. McCain on Health Care: What Kind of Change Do We Need?

John McCain claims to be the candidate of change. However, when it comes to health care, the change he offers will make things worse, not better.

Like President Bush, Senator McCain seeks to undermine our system of employer-based insurance (EBI), which, since World War II has provided
health care coverage to millions of workers. Today, EBI continues to be the major form of coverage for employees and their families.

Currently, individuals who receive EBI do not pay taxes on it. Under the Bush-McCain plan, however, these benefits would count as income, making them
subject to taxation. Senator McCain would offer families a $5000 tax credit to compensate for their increased taxes or to buy coverage of their own in  read more »

Obama talks healthcare while McCain & Palin sling mud

One of the few moments during last week’s debate when Sara Palin actually addressed a substantive policy issue was during the discussion on healthcare. Unlike previous policy comments by Palin the result was a coherent statement – it was also terrifying. She confirmed the McCain stated view that we need to open up health care to (and this is a direct quote) “more vigorous nationwide competition as we have done over the last decade in banking.” It is just unbelievable to me that they are still making this argument in the wake of Bear Stearns, Fannie, Freddie, Lehman, AIG and Wachovia. They must be reading different newspapers than I am.  read more »

Last Night's VP Debate: McCain & Palin Just Don't Get It On Healthcare

Last night Sarah Palin did an admirable job refusing to answer the questions she was asked and instead sticking to the repitition of scripted, high level responses. Interestingly for healthcare wonks like me, healthcare was one of the few areas where she actually engaged on a policy question with any sort of specificity – and the response served to reinforce the misguided nature of the McCain / Palin policy. The following clip is pretty enlightening…

Recent Articles in Philadelphia Inquirer Highlight Problem of Uninsured

While the statistics relating to the issue of the growing number of uninsured have received a lot of attention in this election (though not enough lately), it is the personal stories of the individuals impacted by this crisis that truly underscore the need for change. A recent series in the Philadelphia Inquirer is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of healthcare costs on the uninsured in this country and should serve as a call to arms to those who believe that it undermines the human dignity of every American to allow our fellow citizens to suffer so needlessly.

Make it simple, and think for yourselves, always!

2008 sure has been eventful so far, to say the least. Responsible citizens are energized for the presidential election and eager to make the right choice. It matters, more than ever, to our lives! If the talking heads on TV are making you dizzy, if not sick, turn it off. They often make simple things complicated, so that they can keep talking, and make more money perhaps. Based on speaking to real people during campaign events, here are a few key issues to review carefully and think over:

The country is spending about $3 trillion on the War, according to the Nobel Laureate Economist and Former World Bank Chief Economist, Joseph Stiglitz.

It's the economy? No, it's the politicians, stupid!

The near disastrous meltdown of the world’s financial markets isn’t just “one of those things that happens.” It was and is the inevitable end result of the Reagan-inspired decision to “deregulate, deregulate, deregulate, baby!” Of course, using the word “inspired” and Reagan in the same sentence can create some cognitive dissonance, but so be it.

Reagan was a populous boob who wanted to feather his nest, be liked and make sure that the elite, moneyed-class of America got what they assumed (and have always assumed) was their due. It boiled down to “the rich get richer.”  read more »

Health of the Citizen = Health of the Nation

It must be wonderful for us to be strong, worry free, and, of course, healthy, but our nation is not healthy. Believe it or not, 2008 is a momentous time for us. Aside from the trivialities, there are serious issues involved in this presidential campaign. For the insured/uninsured, employee/employer, and for that matter, each and everyone, healthcare policies proposed by the two presidential campaigns could be the make or break experience when adopted in the near future. Obama proposes affordable coverage for all citizens; McCain’s policy can worsen the status quo, letting individuals sink or swim in the crooked market place.

Yes we can do better, much better! For your own health, for your family’s health, and the health of the nation, cherish your vote!  read more »

PA-05: McCracken for Congress -- Weekly Update -- August 24, 2008

And the Winning Ticket Is — Obama / Biden 08:

Barack Obama made an excellent choice with his selection of Delaware Senator Joe Biden to be his running mate. On Saturday I spent the day working at the Democratic booth at the Centre County Grange Fair and throughout the day people were asking if the announcement had been made. Everyone I spoke with expressed positive opinions about the choice. If this is any indication of the type of qualified people Barack Obama will surround himself with as President, we can all rest assured that our country will be headed in a better direction come January of 2009.

The Edwards Effect

I sent a strongly worded note off to former Presidential candidate John Edwards today via his website, which, while mostly abandoned, is still up and running. It’s the Internet version of a brownfield site here in Western PA; empty and sad, but with plenty of poison just below the surface.

Moments later, I got an “out of office” reply.

Probably for the best, as my missive to Mr. Edwards had various expletives which probably would have doomed it to his campaign’s spam in-box anyway.  read more »
