Kanjorski subcommittee eyes regulatory reform

U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises, will address the need for broad regulatory restructuring of the financial industry during a House Financial Services Committee hearing today.

Noted securities experts and distinguished economists, including a Nobel Prize winner, will testify at the hearing that will focus on how much an outdated and weak regulatory system contributed to the current market turmoil and whether adoption of a strong and more robust financial regulatory system could contribute to a more rapid recovery in the financial markets and the economy.  read more »


Kanjorski backs Fannie, Freddie move

U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on capital markets, insurance and government sponsored enterprises, commented on the actions taken Sunday by the Treasury Department and the Federal Housing Finance Agency related to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae:

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae are extremely important institutions in our nation’s housing finance system. In order to promote economic growth and better stabilize the economy, we must protect them so that we can protect homeowners, homebuyers, taxpayers and other regulated financial institutions,” said Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke.

“I support the actions taken today by Treasury Secretary (Henry) Paulson and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director (James) Lockhart.”  read more »


Barletta donor questioned by Congressman

U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski is questioning a donation made by U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens to Lou Barletta’s 2002 congressional campaign, a move the Republican challenger called desperate.

Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, called on Barletta to return a $1,000 contribution from Stevens, the Alaska senator who was indicted this week on charges of scheming to conceal thousands of dollars worth of gifts from an oil-services company.

Barletta received the contribution from the Northern Lights PAC, which is registered with the Federal Election Committee as a political action committee of Stevens, according to FEC records.  read more »


CBS eyes Kanjorski earmark

A Nanticoke lawmaker was interviewed by a crew from “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” about a $5.6 million federal grant secured by U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski. The report is set to air tonight.

State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke, said the broadcast will examine earmarks, specifically the grant that was intended to fund a parking garage in downtown Nanticoke. That project, which ties into the revitalization of the city’s downtown, has been downgraded to a surface parking lot.

Yudichak said he told a CBS reporter that Kanjorski tried to transfer the money to other projects in the 11th Congressional District – one to the Hotel Sterling in Wilkes-Barre, and one to a Scranton project.  read more »


Barletta announces energy plan

Congressional candidate and Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta proposed more drilling and the greater use of alternative fuels during a Monroe County press conference on Wednesday.

“It’s important, especially here in Monroe County, which is dependent on tourism that will affect the economy, and because so many people commute to work from here,” Barletta said.

Barletta, a Republican, is in a race to unseat U.S. Congressman Paul Kanjorski, a Democrat, for Pennsylvania’s 11th District, which includes Monroe County.  read more »


New GOP survey: Barletta would beat Kanjorski

Republican Lou Barletta would defeat 12-term incumbent Paul Kanjorski by 5 percentage points if the election were held today, according to an internal poll released Monday by the Barletta campaign.

Conducted by Susquehanna Polling and Research, a Harrisburg-based Republican polling agency, the results show Barletta would receive 47 percent of the vote compared to 42 percent for Kanjorski.  read more »


Barletta running for Congress

Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta plans to run for Congress this year, parlaying his fight against illegal immigrants into a race against one of the state’s most entrenched Democrats, according to state Republican Committee Chairman Rob Gleason Jr.

Barletta will announce his candidacy for the GOP nomination in the 11th district seat in “a few days,” Gleason said in an interview today. The seat is held by Democrat Paul Kanjorski.  read more »
